Founded in 1922, the mission of the Toms River Fire Company No. 2 is to extinguish fires, rescue and save lives andMore protect property. Notable events in the early years of the fire department included assisting with a crash and fire of the airship Hindenburg at the Navy Base Lakehurst in 1937 and an Ocean County Jail fire in 1959. Currently there are over 100 members of the Toms River Fire Company No. 2.  Toms River Fire Company No. 2 has two locations: The main station is located on West Water Street, while the substation is at 1049 Hooper Avenue.

The Pleasant Plains Volunteer Fire Company was developed in 1926 by members of the Toms River Fire Department afterMore discussing the need for service in the area because of the volatile grass fields and woodlands.

The deparment covers 23 square miles of Toms River, including 6.1 miles of the Garden State Parkway, seven miles of Route 9, 8.5 miles of Route 527, and three miles of Route 571.

The fire department has grown from 20 members to over 60, including fire police and explorers. Today there are 50 Active Fire Fighters, 8 Fire Police , 2 Probationary Members, 9 Associate Members, and 5 Explorers.

The Toms River Fire Commissioner located on Warner Street is a sub-station of the Pleasant Plains Volunteer Fire Company.
