Good Friday cancels collection
Today, Good Friday, there is no garbage or recycling collection in Toms River. Municipal garbage and recycling pickup is canceled today. If your collection day falls on today, your recycling and garbage will be collected one day later. Today's cancellation is due to a contractual holiday for Public Works. The Christian observance of Good Friday as part of the Easter Holiday is not a government holiday.

Toms River Zoning Board OKs use variance for a new office building for St. Mary of the Lake.
The Toms River Zoning Board of Adjustment has approved a land-use variance permitting construction of a two-story, multi-use building for The Church of St. Mary of the Lake. Located on the corner of Honey Locust Drive and Massachusetts Avenue, the church, represented by attorney John DeVincens, came before the board with preliminary plans to construct a 200 to 225-person occupancy building. The project intends to provide additional office space for church business and will include a catering hall for parishioner meetings and other church-related gatherings. “I believe that this is inherently beneficiary to the community,“ he said at the zoning board meeting last week. “[The building] serves a very real function.” According to a statement …

Nobility Crest project to be built north of Cox Cro
Officials approved last night a plan that would put affordable housing units, townhouses and a strip mall on Route 9 north of Cox Cro Road. The Toms River Zoning Board of Adjustment voted to approve the Nobility Crest project with an amended variance on a proposal to build a strip mall, townhouses and two apartment buildings. The project was first put before the board in 2006, again in 2009 and, after three meetings in 2011, the client, Nobility Crest @ Dover LLC, was granted final approval to proceed with construction by the board. The plan will erect a 53,000-square-foot shopping center, two 25-unit apartment buildings and 200 townhouse units north of Cox Cro Road on Route 9. Joseph D. Coronato Esq., who represents Nobility Crest @ …

Pair charged with several counts already
Toms River and Barnegat police departments are coordinating in an investigation of 65 car burglaries reported in late January. Barnegat police announced today that two 19-year-olds have been charged in connection with the string of 65 car burglaries that took place Jan. 27 and 28 in several township neighborhoods. Det. William Hetrick charged Donald Rivera of South Toms River and Nicholas Manochio of Effort, Pa. on Thursday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 2, respectively, with multiple counts of burglary, theft, credit card theft and credit card fraud, said Lt. Patrick Shaffery of the Barnegat Township Police Department. Police got a lead early on in the case when the suspects used a credit card stolen from one of the burgled cars to buy gas…

An annual tradition that attracts vendors from as far away as Oklahoma returns to Toms River next weekend. The Ocean Wreck Divers will be hosting their 23rd annual SCUBA Flea Market on Sunday, Feb. 20 at Toms River Intermediate North. Ocean Wreck Divers of New Jersey was organized in 1978 by Joan Follmer, and the purpose of the club has expanded over the years to include more than just diving. The group has adopted a dune in Ortley Beach, and lends its voice to ecological issues concerning the Jersey Shore. The majority of the booths at the market sell items that can typically be found at dive shops. Some are run by local shops selling new gear at discounted rates, while others are run by vendors who sell used gear. Additional vendors will…

Shot fired at store manager outside the building
Toms River Police are investigating an early Sunday morning robbery of painkillers at the Walgreens drug store, routes 9 and 70. The suspect, described as a white male, 5-foot-9, with blue eyes wearing a dark jacket, beige pants, black shoes, gloves and a mask, entered the store around 2:30 a.m. A Monmouth Ocean Consolidated Intelligence Bureau bulletin issued immediately after the robbery said the suspect had his mouth and nose covered with a mask, and fled on foot heading behind the building. The suspect entered the drug store, went to the back of the store, jumped over the counter of the pharmacy and demanded "oxys" from the pharmacist on duty at the 24-hour-store. He put the pills, over 100, in a tan plastic bag that he brought with…

Toms River Patch asks for your views on plan for 200 townhouse, apartments on Route 9 near Cox Cro.
There's a big plan before the Toms River Zoning Board, from a developer hoping to build a strip mall, two apartment buildings, and 200 town homes on Route 9 north of Cox Cro Road, in the Pleasant Plains section of town. Our Question of the Day asks for your views on the plan. This area of Route 9 remains more industrial in its use, so is the addition of multi-family use a welcome change? Or do you feel the area is fine the way it is? Are you concerned that this would put additional vehicular traffic on Route 9, or wonder if school-age children may have to walk along the busy road for classes at Citta Elementary? Maybe you are pleased that such a building project would be jobs to the area, or are you concerned that in this real estate …

Mayor, Committeeman remembered as hard worker
Clarence E. "Bud" Aldrich III, 66, former mayor and committeeman, died of natural causes early Feb. 6. Aldrich was first elected in 1993, taking office in 1994 as a committeeman on the then-Dover Township Committee, which chose him as mayor in 1995, 1996 and 2002. He resigned from the committee on June 12, 2002. Current and former Toms River officials recalled Aldrich fondly. “When I was running for Mayor, Bud told me always do what is best for the town,” said former mayor Paul Brush. “I respected Bud for that. I thank him for his service to Toms River.” J. Mark Mutter, township clerk and historian, served on the township committee with Aldrich from 1993 through 2001, and remembered his administrative prowess. “He was one of the hardest …
Toms River spent double its snow removal budget this winter
Snow is a four letter word that is spelling out double the amount of bills Toms River budgeted for this year. With approximately $1.25 million spent to clean up the Dec. 26 blizzard alone, Toms River sought relief from FEMA to help pay for such costs as overtime, double and triple time incurred by staff the day after Christmas, said Toms River Township Administrator Paul Shives. Mayor Thomas Kelaher added the costs also include payment to outside contractors and repairs to equipment broken by six-foot snowdrifts. Toms River also reimburses age-restricted communities and condominium associations who use their own staff to plow their streets, as they are legally required to do so, Kelaher said. Shives added that FEMA could reimburse the …
