Plans for southern Lacey stretch of Barnegat Branch Trail include four water crossings
When the Barnegat Branch Trail was first conceived, Ocean County Freeholder James Lacey knew that the path — along an old railroad right-of-way — would have its challenges. Among the biggest of those challenges is the next phase to be built: Phase V through the southern part of Lacey Township. With four water crossings — the South and North branches of Oyster Creek, Middle Creek, and Cedar Lake — and Homeland Security concerns around the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station —it was going to take negotiating and planning to keep a contiguous path in place and maintain a nature trail feel at the same time. When complete, the biking and walking trail will cover a 15.6-mile stretch from southern Toms River to Barnegat
The county is ready to take the next steps to begin building the Lacey portion of the Barnegat Branch Trail. An ordinance introduced Tuesday at the county Board of Freeholders meeting in Toms River would spend $600,000 for the design, permitting and construction of the next phase of the trail. That piece, Phase V-A, would stretch from Lacey's southern boundary with Waretown to Lacey Road. A public hearing and vote on the ordinance will be held at the July 18 meeting of the freeholders. The Lacey portion of the trail is one of the latter pieces to be built. Construction of the trail, which began in 2007, has already covered more than half of the trail's eventual 15.6-mile distance. A two-mile section of trail in Berkeley Township officially opened to the public
It’s been a big week for the Barnegat Branch Trail. A new two-mile section of the linear park along the bed of an abandoned line of the old Central Railroad of New Jersey was officially opened yesterday in Berkeley Township, days after freeholders announced bidding will start on the fourth phase of the trail. And trail users in Barnegat this week will have noticed new additions: interpretive signs that offer a window into the park’s past as a transportation hub along the Jersey Shore.
