Route 35 Bridge Testing Finished

Bridge between Point Beach and Brielle to remain passable

You'll be able to keep crossing the Route 35 bridge when you come to it. It's been passable since mid-afternoon Wednesday and it looks like it will stay that way. The state says the testing on the bridge is finished, which is good news for those who sat in traffic Wednesday as the bridge was intermittently in the raised position. Contractor crews left the bridge shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday and will not need to return. Contractors for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) were testing the locking mechanisms on the bridge, they ran two or three tests and they were just fine, said DOT spokesman Timothy Greeley on Thursday. "They do not have anything further planned," Greeley said. Acknowledging that not getting the word out to the…

Point Beach Workers Save 3 Trapped in Inlet Rocks Thurs. Night

Police, fire and first aid work together to save a woman, a man and a boy

Point Beach police, fire and first aid responders worked in the cold, rising tide of the Manasquan Inlet waters Thursday night to save a woman and a boy who had tried to save her himself. Maureen Bush, 29, Manchester, fell between sharp, craggy rocks into the inlet water, and Daniel Reinhardt, 16, who had tried to save her, are both OK after being rescued by the emergency responders, said Police Detective Clint Daniel. "The 16-year-old boy was fantastic and should be commended," Daniel said at police headquarters Thursday night. "He tried to get her out, but it was just too slippery. Everyone worked together and did a great job." Daniel said the incident should be a wake-up call to everyone to never go on the inlet rocks, which are …

Locals' Summer

Summer Memories at Ocean County Museum

Extend summer memories of the boardwalks and beaches by visiting the Ocean County Historical Museum's latest exhibit: Stroll the Boardwalk covering decades of beach and boardwalk fashion and fun.

Summer is drawing to a close and the beaches and boardwalks around the area slowing down, but at the Ocean County Historical Museum in Toms River, summer memories of the beach and boardwalk can last throughout October with the Stroll The Boardwalk exhibit. Through donations, loans and their own archived collection, the Museum has gathered items from and related to the Boardwalks of Ocean County spanning the late 1800’s to the present. “The bathing suit collection is probably the most talked about section of the exhibit,” said Mary Lou Unger from the acquisition team at the Museum. “The women’s bathing suits at the turn of the century were made of heavy wool and were worn into the water along with stockings and shoes,” said Unger “Of course…

I wonder why all that stuff wouldn't go to the Ocean County library instead? It sounds like a redundancy in taxpayer funding? Most of the county's historical archives are kept in a safe place at the library. That building is over 100 years old and would probably go up in flames if somebody sneezed on it on a hot day. I hear they have a lot of very old historic one-of-kind documents squirreled …   more ›

Letters to the Editor

Letter: All Armed Forces Deserve Park Discount, and Respect

Toms River resident unhappy with IBSP service

Letter to the editor as submitted by Toms River resident Heather Billich: Island Beach State Park discriminates between branches of the military. My husband and I have lives our entire lives in Toms River. Both graduated High School East. Today (May 26) my husband, a corporal in the USMC reserves for almost 6 years now, was told that being a Marine was not good enough to get complimentary access, because he was not a member of the national guard. I wasn't upset about having to pay the ten dollars to get onto the beach, what did upset me was the lack of respect, and the look on my husband's face when being told being a Marine wasn't good enough. After returning from an overseas operation this April, losing two fellow Marines, he is not …

Typical NJ BS, any military person that goes through that sacrifice in any capacity should always be allowed to have applicable discounts wherever. How many people can actually say they served in the military and want access to IBSP. NJ is too cheap, and has too many fat cats hoarding all the states money.   more ›

Countdown to Memorial Day

Column: Blessed with Beach LIfe

Don’t forget how lucky we are to live where we live

It seems like just yesterday I was hoping for a snow day. And now, Memorial Day is upon us. Last weekend, we were not among the many who attended Bamboozle, my kids are a little too little and I am a little too old. Instead, we hit the Belmar beach on Saturday afternoon and thanks to a breeze from the right direction, got to listen to Bamboozle for free. We ran into a friend on the beach, there with her cousin, who was visiting from Bergen County. We were introduced and the cousin said something like, “It so great that you can do this all the time.” She is so right. Sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live to where we live. I grew up in Middlesex County, so I know how lucky we are. I think if you grew up here, like my kids, you don't …

PHOTOS: A Summer's Day in April in Seaside

Families trek to Island Beach, Seaside to enjoy 80-degree days

No matter what the temperature was, it was still a Monday in April. The locks across the amusement gates on Casino Pier and across the bath house bathrooms in Island Beach State Park bathing beach reminded an influx of visitors that even though temperatures climbed to 86 degrees on the beach, the off-season was still in effect. There were plenty of seasonal businesses left to open, there wasn't a lifeguard or badge checker in sight, and an Ocean Terrace parking lot was $5 for the day. Still, families enjoyed a trek to the boardwalk and beaches. And businesses open year-round saw a bump in traffic. Kohrs staffers swirled frozen custard into sugar cones, stand operaters courted passersby with prizes, slices were slid from pizza oven onto …
