Planning a vacation or just a day trip? Patch has all the information on the Shore's best beaches

While certain access points and facilities might be closed as municipalities continue to work on restoration, for the most part, the beaches will be operational. The only beach that remains off limits to the public is Mantoloking. The borough was home to a breach that split Ocean County's northern barrier island in half and was one of the hardest hit communities in New Jersey during the storm. It seems to me that I heard a similar sentiment on a separate thread @George. Oh, yes indeed, I did: "Sue 9:20 pm on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 The only house he cares about is at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave...." That's twice now @George, you might want to try an original thought.   more ›

Column: DEP Commissioner Addresses New Beach Access

Rules changed Oct. 4

Column as submitted by state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin: Governor Christie and I are strongly committed to ensuring there is excellent public access to our ocean beaches, bays and rivers in New Jersey. We view this as a fundamental right for everyone in our state. As millions of residents and visitors know, New Jersey already has wonderful access to our 127 miles of beaches and shoreline, with a multitude of different experiences to suit many tastes and needs. To further enhance Shore access and help redevelop urban waterfronts, the Department of Environmental Protection this month has adopted a new common sense Public Access Rule that sets strict requirements for providing public access, but also …

State Officials Approve New Beach Access Rules

The rules side with special interests by blocking access to beaches and waterfronts, Sierra Club says.

State environmental officials have approved a revision of the state's public access rules for beaches, bays and tidal waterways, the Associated Press reported Friday. Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin says the new rules maintain existing public access, while granting more power to local communities to write their own access plans, subject to state approval, the AP reported. The Public Access Rule was signed Wednesday, and will take effect Nov. 5. Jeff Tittel, head of the Sierra Club's New Jersey chapter, wrote a blog post for Patch Friday saying the rules "side with special interests by blocking people from getting proper access to beaches and waterfronts." "When they first proposed the rule it was a major roll…

Risk of Dangerous Rip Currents Friday

National Weather Service warning of moderate risk along NJ coast

The National Weather Service is warning swimmers along the Jersey Shore Friday to be wary of "dangerous" rip currents.  The service has issued a hazardous weather outlook regarding rip tides along the entirety of the New Jersey Coast for Friday morning through evening.  Sea and wind conditions could cause dangerous currents along the entire coast, the warning says.  "There is a chance sea and wind conditions will produce a moderate risk of dangerous rip currents along the New Jersey coast today," the warning says.  The warning is in effect from today through this evening.  Already during this young summer season, several swimmers have died while many more have been rescued from rip currents along the Jersey Shore.
