A proposal to hang an identifying flag below the American Flag at the Bey Lea Shopping Plaza drew impassioned dissent from several veterans and their families during a recent meeting of the planning board. The shopping plaza located on Hooper and Bay avenues is best known as the home of Toys R Us, Pet Smart and Bed, Bath and Beyond. The applicant was proposing a flag that would be less than half the size of the existing American Flag that currently flies on the site. It would contain the words “Bey Lea Shopping Center” The applicant needed board approval for the flag because this would count as a third road-side sign when only two are permitted. How ridiculous that a variance is needed to fly a flag. That's the real problem here. No wonder Toms River cannot entice new businesses...look what they have to deal with! The Planning Board, Zoning Board and whatever other board the town has truly hurt business in our township.   more ›
