Around Ocean County and beyond, community members remember Christopher Matlosz
Many in Ocean and Monmouth counties are excepted today to remember a local police officer – a hero and a friend to many – who died two years ago while serving his community. Christopher Matlosz, a Lakewood police officer, was killed at age 27 during a Jan. 14, 2011, patrol. He was gunned down by Jahmell Crockam, then 19, who was eventually convicted in connection with the crime. Matlosz was shot three times while seated in his patrol car, by Crockam, a Lakewood resident. Authorities searched for two days until the suspect was captured in a Camden apartment by a high-risk entry team. The community has not forgotten Matlosz, as evidenced by the many honors and remembrances held for him in 2011 and 2012. Among them: In May, Matlosz' name was …

Nearly two years after Justin Williams was killed and his body left on a Lakewood street, three men have been indicted in connection with his murder, including the man convicted for the killing of Lakewood police officer Christopher Matlosz. Jahmell W. Crockham, 21, who was sentenced in February to life in prison after he was convicted of murdering Matlosz, was indicted Thursday by an Ocean County grand jury on one count of first-degree murder, and second-degree counts of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, in the shooting death of Williams. In addition, Crockam and Calvin R. Presley of Jackson and Darius Jamal Johnson, 22, of Howell have been indicted on a count of conspiracy to hinder …

Lakewood Officer Christopher Matlosz among those remembered
The rain couldn't stop them. As a steady precipitation fell at the Lakewood Police Department headquarters Wednesday morning, about 200 law enforcement officers from around New Jersey rolled in on their bicycles. At their first stop of the morning after embarking from Howell, the riders — including a contingent of seven from Manchester — honored Christopher Matlosz, a Lakewood police officer who was killed while on duty in January of 2011. Jahmell Crockam was convicted of murdering the Manchester resident and sentenced to life in prison in March of this year. The rainy, dreary day was appropriate, said Lakewood Chief of Police Robert Lawson as he addressed the cyclists. "This is a solemn occasion," he said. "I know its not very …

Jahmell Crockam, the man convicted of murdering Lakewood police Officer Cristopher Matlosz, was also sentenced on weapons charges
Jahmell Crockam, the man convicted of murdering Lakewood police Officer Cristopher Matlosz, was sentenced at the Ocean County Justice Complex on Thursday to life without parole. Crockam showed no emotion when Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels announced the sentence. Matlosz's fiance, Kelly Walsifer, appeared composed as she read a statement to the court before the sentencing. Now should be the time for celebration, Walsifer said, as she was supposed to marry Matlosz next month, on April 21. "That's what I should be thinking about — our wedding," said Walsifer, who attended the sentencing despite battling a cold. "The defendant stole that from us." "Mr. Crockam was luckier than Chris. He had the opportunity to be tried by 12. Chris …

A jury found Jahmell Crockam guilty of murdering Lakewood officer Christopher Matlosz
While providing closure to a crime that changed many lives 13 months ago, a guilty verdict for Jahmell Crockam also serves as a somber reminder to those serving in law enforcement that their lives are on the line daily. What was possibly the first deadly shooting of a police officer in Ocean County's history, officers said, shows that crime is no longer something that's reserved for the cities. "It brings home the reality that this is a dangerous job," said Manchester's Chief of Police Brian Klimakowksi. Officers can find themselves in situations in which they can be hurt — or worse — in an instant. Lakewood patrolman Christopher Matlosz was conducting a routine patrol on Jan. 14, 2011, when he spotted Crockam and identified him as a man …

Jury began deliberations on Wednesday afternoon
Jurors did not return a verdict in the Jahmell Crockam murder trial after spending an afternoon deliberating. The jurors were brought back into the courtroom at about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday after they asked to have a portion of a cell phone engineer's testimony and the weapons charge against Crockam repeated. They then asked the court to resume their deliberations Thursday morning. Deliberations began Wednesday afternoon after the prosecution and defense presented their closing arguments in the murder trial. The timeline of the events on the day that Lakewood police officer Christopher Matlosz was gunned down coupled with coroborating statements from multiple witnesses is important to proving Crockam pulled the trigger, said William J. …

Crockam will not take the stand in his defense
After seven days of testimony, the state rested its case Tuesday in the trail of Jahmell Crockam. Crockam will not take the stand in his defense, he told Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels. When the judge asked the defendant if he understood that he had the right to testify, Crockam responded affirmatively. Following the day's proceedings, which included testimony from two men who said that Crockam confessed the crime to them, defense attorney Mark Fury said that he does not plan to call any witnesses to the stand. Closing arguments are scheduled for Wednesday morning. Crockam is accused of killing Christopher Matlosz, a 27-year-old Lakewood police officer and Manchester resident, in January 2011. Darius Johnson — who is in jail …

Testimony in the Jahmell Crockam murder trial continued Thursday afternoon
A family friend said that he accompanied two men to dispose of Jahmell Crockam's gun after the suspect confessed to him that he shot a Lakewood police officer. "The cop seemed like he was reaching, so he shot first," Corey Rua said as he recalled speaking with Crockam in a Camden apartment about his encounter with officer Christopher Matlosz the night after the patrolman was killed in January, 2011. "I asked if he was cleaned up and disposed of the clothes," Rua said. Crockam responded that he had done both, according to the witness. Rua, 41, a longtime friend of Crockam's mother, testified before Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels on Thursday afternoon that he knew the 20-year-old suspect for the past two years. Crockam's uncle asked…
