Traffic Alert: Church Road Closed at GSP Overpass For Construction

Closure runs from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday

Residents are advised to avoid Church Road at the Garden State Parkway overpass in Toms River due to ongoing road construction. There will be a full detour from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. The Toms River Fire District No. 2 is warning motorists to expect delays on the GSP in the area. "This is for road construction on the bridge for the park," according to the fire district's website. Motorists are advise to use either Whitty Road and Route 571 as alternate routes. For full details, view this message on the web.

Church Rd. interchange at North Bay would alleviate daily college traffic, and tens of thousands of day-trippers heading to Seaside 6 months of the year, as well as 10,000 locals between home and work. The Parkway's big new mess at Rt. 70 won't help any of those. Get the engineers started on a new exit/entry now.   more ›

Updated: Buckwald Drive Reopens after October Closure

Closures in place for electrical work

Editor's Note: The story is updated with both lanes of Buckwald now open for traffic this morning. A main thorofare for Ocean County College and shortcut between Church and Hooper avenues reopened after about two weeks of construction. Buckwald Drive, closed for electrical repairs, had for most of October seen both lanes closed for the project. College Drive was the only entrance to Ocean County College while Buckwald was shuttered. Through Oct. 5, both lanes of the north-south road were closed, creating reported backups and heavy volume along Hooper Avenue between College Drive and Yorktowne Boulevard through Silverton. On Oct. 12, the road was expected to be open, according to the county roads department. Buckwald and Hooper are both …

When will the promised road from campus to North Bay be built? That might alleviate some of the horrendous Church Rd. traffic jams at Hooper Ave. and Brick Blvd.   more ›

Lakehurst Road Lane Change for Pole Work

Lakehurst Road traffic between Sutton and Oliver slow as utility crews repair pole

Toms River Police are directing slowed traffic on Lakehurst Road between Sutton and Oliver streets as crews repair a utility pole on the northbound side of the county road. The northbound traffic is detoured into the south bound lanes, and southbound traffic is riding on the shoulder as the crews repair a pole leaning off the road. Traffic cones are in the area and traffic signs are alerting drivers coming from Route 37 down Route 527, also known as Lakehurst Road, of the traffic issue. Utility crews are working in the northbound lanes of Route 527, with a new utility pole trucked in to replace the current one. Traffic remained slow through noon as the project began earlier this morning.   Traffic Map

UPDATE: Route 571 Head-on Collision Kills One

A 73-year-old woman dies of her injuries from the crash

A 73-year-old Toms River woman has died of the injuries she suffered in a head-on crash Friday on Bey Lea Road, police have confirmed. Kathleen Lacey of South Chanticleer Court, who was westbound in a 2006 Hyundai Sonata that was struck head-on by a 2007 Jeep driven by Alfred Cannin of Manchester, died of her injuries at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Toms River Chief Michael Mastronardy said on Saturday. It is the second fatal accident in Toms River this week and the fifth this year, Mastronardy said. The accident happened about 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Investigators believe Cannin's Jeep crossed the double yellow line into the path of the Hyundai. The collision was strong enough that the Jeep overturned, injuring Cannin and his 5-…

Oak Ridge Parkway: Detoured Back To Where You Started

Multiple road closures as you exit Route 37 to Oak Ridge put you further west back on Route 37

Follow along with me, if you will, on the most epic of journeys. What you might expect was a simple trip from Route 37 to Route 571 via Oak Ridge Parkway, is instead a cross-town trek of baffling proportions. One of the more confusing detours has been in place along the Oak Ridge Parkway for Hurricane Irene damage to roads there. It’s one that will inspire both déjà vu and vertigo. It’s straight out of a Kafka novel. It’s … not fun, to say the least. You hop off Route 37 and head north on Oak Ridge Parkway (Route 527). Your first obstacle is immediate: you must bear right onto Oakside Drive and fend for yourself, using your knowledge or assumptions on how local side streets work to get back to Oak Ridge Parkway. Extra points for you, if …

Funny article, Catherine. Maybe the sign at the first detour should be changed to "Forget about it...it's not worth it."   more ›

Buckwald Drive Reopens, Allowing Traffic Between Hooper, Church Road

Road to Ocean County College closed most of August

Today, a sigh of relief from those hoping to go from Church Road to Hooper Avenue (or vice versa). Ocean County College reported yesterday the closed Buckwald Drive is scheduled to reopen today after a two-week closure for construction. The county road was closed beginning Aug. 2. Construction closed the road to tend to water main work, as crews advance construction projects at Ocean County College. Buckwald Drive connects Church Road to College Drive, the main entrance to Ocean County College. The road closure essentially created a no-through traffic situation for the college campus, whereas normally traffic could go from Hooper to Church Road, as a short cut of sorts. The College Drive entrance was open but all traffic had to exit from …

UPDATE: Route 37 Cleared Following Morning Crash Near Commonwealth Boulevard

Crash occurred at the intersection of Route 37 and Commonwealth

Traffic along Route 37 near Commonwealth Boulevard is flowing normally as of 10:10 a.m. after emergency responders cleared the scene of a Friday morning crash in which three were injured, police said. Traffic was slow-going earlier as crews worked to clear the scene of the two-car collision.  According to Manchester Police Capt. Lisa Parker, a 1998 Ford Expedition driven by Nicholas A. Mazza, a 53-year-old Toms River resident, struck a 2002 Pontiac Trans Am operated by Tonya J. Hannemann, 27, of Bayville.  Mazza and Hannemann were removed from their vehicles by the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department and transported by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune, Parker said. Mazza suffered face and neck injuries; Hannemann …

Route 571 Collision Between Car and Truck Leaves One Man Hospitalized

Westbound traffic detoured after 8 a.m. today

A collision between a car and truck on Route 571 near the Fairway Apartments closed the major road for more than a hour this morning, creating a detour for westbound traffic. Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said the truck was traveling eastbound on Route 571, when a car exited from the apartment complex into the road around 8 a.m. today. The vehicles collided, and while the truck driver was not injured, the male driver of the car was airlifted to Jersey Shore Trauma Center in Neptune for serious injuries. Both drivers, whose names were not released, were the only occupants in the vehicles. The incident was just east of Old Freehold Road, and extrication teams from Pleasant Plains Fire Company and Silverton Fire Companies …

Water Main Breaks on Chestnut, Creates Detour and Water Service Interruptions for Neighborhood

Affected: Chestnut Street from Old Freehold Road to Savannah Street

A water main break continues to shutter portions of Chestnut Street as United Water crews dig up the street to repair a 20-foot section of pipe that broke this morning. The streets affected are Chestnut Street from Old Freehold Road to Savannah Street, including White Oak Court, Black Oak Court, Pin Oak Court and Red Oak Court, with approximately 75 residential as well as commercial and county offices affected. United Water said at 8 a.m. there is a temporary interruption of service to those areas, with customers experiencing no water, low water pressure or discolored water.
