'After the Pills...Heroin' Drug Abuse Prevention Seminar Being Held in Toms River Aug. 10

From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on August 10, Ocean County Health Department and the Governor's Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse will sponsor "After the Pills....Heroin," a seminar for drug abuse prevention and awareness. The seminar will be held at Rutgers Cooperative Extenstion, 1623 Whitesville Road, Toms River. Guest speakers include Special Agent Douglas Collier, DEA speaking on “Prescription Drugs and Heroin" and Meg Du Pont Parisi will be speaking on “A Parent’s Perspective.” Special Agent Collier currently serves as the Public Information Officer for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), New Jersey Division. Toms River Man Sentenced for 10 Years in Drug Conspiracy

Man arrested with Queens resident while speeding through Maryland

A Toms River man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for conspiring to distribute cocaine base while in Maryland, the U.S. District Attorney for Maryland announced today. U.S. District Judge William D. Quarles, Jr. sentenced Timothy Wilson, age 43, of Toms River to 10 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. The charges were conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute the cocaine base, and possession of cocaine base with intent to distribute. The week-long trial included evidence that Wilson, along with a co-conspirator from Queens, Louis Ahorrio, left Wilson's home in Toms River and embarked south in a rental car. They were stopped by Maryland State Police troopers on Route 113 in Worcester County …

Fugitive and Brother Arrested After Traffic Stop

Man wanted in Toms River, brother arrested in Brick

Brick police officers found 411 bags of heroin in a vehicle they stopped over the weekend, leading to the arrest of an Atlantic City man. They later captured the man's brother, who was wanted by Toms River police. Officers stopped a silver Chevy Impala being driven by Hasan Singleton, 35, on Chambers Bridge Road Saturday afternoon around 4:10 p.m. According to Capt. John Rein, Singleton was observed leaving a Second Street residence known to be frequented by a man wanted by Toms River Police regarding an incident involving a handgun. After stopping the vehicle, officers found 411 bags of heroin and $3,700 in cash, Rein said. Residents who are wondering what they can do with their unused or expired medicine can find a solution in West Long Branch this weekend. Unused or expired medication can be dropped off at Toms River Police headquarters on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) program designed to stop the abuse of prescription drugs. But even most places selling meds for pets on line now are requiring you fax in a legit prescription, first. Physician Indicted for Fraudulently Receiving Drugs

Dr. Frank E. Machiaverna indicted on 24 counts

A Toms River doctor is facing 24 charges of getting the amphetamines Ritalin and Adderall by fraud between Jan. 21, 2010 and Jan. 4 of this year. Dr. Frank E. Machiaverna, 60, of Donna Dee Court, is accused of getting the drugs by fraud in Toms River and Brick townships, according to an indictment against him returned by an Ocean County grand jury. According to documents obtained by Patch from the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners, Machiaverna voluntarily surrendered his license to practice medicine Jan. 31. According to those records, Machiaverna was observed filling orders for Ritalin and Adderall in the names of fictitous patients. Toms River Police hosted Prescription Take Back Day, where people hand in unused, expired prescription drugs

Toms River residents reached into their medicine cabinets and handed in about 200 pounds of prescription drugs on April 30. As part of Prescription Drug Takeback Day, anyone could drop off their unwanted, unused and expired prescriptions to Toms River Police headquarters on Oak Avenue. More than 200 pounds were collected in the township, officials said, and 12,000 pounds were collected across New Jersey. Saturday, April 30, was the day of the semi-annual Prescription Drug Takeback Day, operated locally by the Toms River Police Department in conjunction with the New Jersey Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
