Police Chief: Summer Saw Many DUI Stops

Police also conducted drunk driving check point over Labor Day weekend

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said police have seen an increase in drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol this year. The unofficial end of a heavy tourist season was marked by a drunk driving checkpoint off Route 37 in Toms River on Labor Day weekend, but police said the summer was notable for the number of driving under the influence arrests. Saturday into Sunday, a drunk driving check point was conducted by police on Route 37, resulting in traffic delays into Seaside Heights over the bridge. The check points are conducted by local police as well as the county. "The department will continue to aggressively enforce laws pertaining to driving under the influence," said Mastronardy. Two Charged in Road Rage Incident

Forked River man charged with DUI; second man charged with aggravated assault in Toms River incident

A Forked River man is facing an aggravated assault charge and another Forked River man is facing a charge of drunken driving after a fight at the post office in Toms River on Thursday night. Ralph Woodcock, 47, of Beach Boulevard, Forked River, was charged with aggravated assault, according to Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy, while Thomas Concannon, 31, of Buena Vista Road, Forked River, was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle. According to the report from Mastronardy, Toms River police responded to a fight call in front of the post office on Water Street but upon arrival, police found those involved had fled. Jeep Wrangler Crashes Into Parked Police Car

While conducting a traffic stop, a Manchester police car was struck by a Jeep Wrangler on Route 70

A Brick woman was charged after her Jeep Wrangler overturned when it crashed into a parked Manchester police car east of the intersection of Routes 70 and 539 at 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Manchester Patrolman Adam Guker, 32, was conducting a traffic stop and had just returned to his patrol car when the Jeep, being driven by Aphrodite Rakos, 25, from Brick, struck the rear of the car, police said. The impact caused the Jeep to ride up the side of the patrol car and proceeded to overturn, coming to a rest on the driver’s side in the opposite lane of travel, police said. The vehicle that Guker had pulled over for a motor vehicle violation was not involved in the accident, police said. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene of the collision and …
