$1 Million Firehouse Land Buy Before Voters Thursday

District 1 residents asked to decide $1 million land purchase for new firehouse on Hadley and Hooper Avenue

A $1 million land buy for a new firehouse will be in the hands of voters in Toms River Fire District 1 on Thursday. The special referendum vote affects just those districts served by Toms River Fire District 1: generally, downtown Toms River, East Dover and the barrier island. District 2, which is Pleasant Plains, Silverton and North Dover, is not impacted by the vote. District 1 is aiming to move Toms River Fire Co. No. 1 & 2, which operate out of the Robbins Street and Water Street stations currently, into a new firehouse to be built on Hadley and Hooper Avenue where Williamson Realty currently is. District 1 Administrator Brian Kubiel, also the township council vice president, said moving the two downtown firehouses out of their current…

Laurelton Village patients were moved to Ocean Medical Center

A fire at the Laurelton Village nursing facility in Brick early Monday morning resulted in 14 patients being moved to nearby Ocean Medical Center, authorities said. Also, one police officer was treated for smoke inhalation and later released. A fire was reported at the 170-bed nursing facility around 5:23 a.m. Monday, according to Brick Police Capt. John Rein. Brick Fire Marshal Kevin C. Batzel said investigators believe the fire started in a combined heating and air conditioning unit in an exterior wall of a patient's room. Staff members quickly removed patients from the room, and the building's sprinkler system kept the fire under control until firefighters arrived, Batzel said. Rein said the room was occupied by two patients at the time…

I watched the towers come down....I was in midtown with my two kids. I still get a heavy chest and fight not to cry when I see the footage. We were on a balcony up around 20 floors watching. I told my children that day...."Life as you have ever known it....will never be the same again"   more ›

Weekend's High Winds Affected Fire Communications

Fire district administrator says radio service only briefly impacted.

High winds tampered with Toms River fire communications, temporarily taking out some radio service over the weekend. Toms River Fire District No. 1 Administrator Bill Golkiewicz said final checks on Tuesday morning confirmed radio operations were completely restored. Since brief, partial outages due to high winds that began Friday night, the district has been checking radio operations to make sure nothing is amiss. That, on top of administering voting operations for a fire election, made for a busy weekend through early Tuesday, he said. Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said no injuries were reported in other incidents due to the high wind. Mastronardy said several trees fell on residential properties, and a brush fire was also …
