Utility cautions that using generators can be dangerous
JCP&L is getting ready for Hurricane Sandy, with extra staff on standby and a lot of lessons learned. JCP&L clearly has not forgotten the criticism it took after Tropical Storm Irene ravaged New Jersey in August 2011. Utility officials learned from it, made a wide array of improvements in technology, communications and planning and they're ready to put that to the test, said JCP&L spokesman Ron Morano. "We've made improvements to how we provide customer information," Morano said, adding the company is doing all it can to prepare for Sandy and to plan on how to keep officials and residents informed and well-served. For starters, JCP&L is doing what everyone else is doing: closely watching weather forecasts, trying to figure out when and …

Traffic map, live cameras show conditions as rain pelts mainland and barrier island again
Another afternoon storm heaped more rain atop yesterday's reported eight inches of rainfall, again flooding roadways in Toms River. Traffic continues to be slow around low-lying areas. Today flooding was reported on Route 37 eastbound, Coolidge Avenue and Fischer Boulevard near Hooper Avenue, among other areas. Route 35 is also experiencing heavy flooding. Check our interactive traffic map featuring the Garden State Parkway, Route 37, Route 35 and Route 70 before hitting the road. In this real-time traffic map from Mapquest, green portions mean traffic is flowing freely, while yellow and red indicate traffic delays. Zoom in or out if there's a route where you need a close-up. A gallery from around Toms River of storm damage Monday night through Tuesday evening
Fischer Boulevard, Coolidge Avenue, and Hooper Avenue were flooded along low lying areas tying up traffic. A home was cracked off its foundation. Power outages gripped several hundred customers. A storm that began Monday night into Tuesday, and a second band of rain that swept Toms River Tuesday afternoon, left residents driving through floods, seeing basements fill with water, and more damage. Here's a gallery of photos from the storms.
Silverton basements flood, while multiple lanes of Coolidge and Fischer closed for flooding
A day of heavy rain continued flooding conditions in Toms River as a second set of storms drenched the area, closing portions of major roads and destroying a house. Silverton Fire Chief Bob Sinnott said multiple emergency responders were called to a Darren Place home after the enormous amount of rain so flooded the soil it cracked a basement wall to the home. A 20-foot section of the wall cracked, sending mud and soil into the home, which building inspectors condemned, Sinnott said. Elsewhere, Hooper Avenue southbound between South Shore Drive and Fischer Boulevard was down to one lane due to flooding, around 3:30 p.m. This afternoon on Coolidge near Adams avenues, previous flooding from this morning returned with the additional rain. …

Roads along Route 37 reported flooded as traffic lights overnight were out
The crack of lightning and curtains of rain continued to draw an emergency response Tuesday morning, with flooding reported and power outages in Toms River. A storm that rolled in around 11 p.m. drenched Toms River through 8 a.m. Tuesday. At 12:30 a.m., traffic lights on Brick Boulevard between Beaverson and Drum Point Road were malfunctioning, while Toms River fire companies were activated for reports of structures being struck by lightning. Soon thereafter, reports of flooding came in, and poor conditions remain in some places throughout the township. A Holly Village Lane resident reported massive flooding of the street, off Adams Avenue, seeing "Homes flooded, road impassable," there at 8 a.m. Route 37 near Coolidge was flooded as …

Activities continue to be rescheduled at saturated parks
Township parks were among the lesser known casualties of last month's Hurricane Irene, as flooding's effects are still being felt on frequently used playing fields. The little league baseball fields on Mapletree Road were flooded. Eric Schubiger, director of recreation, said that the Winding River fields and trails needed to be closed for a few days due to excessive water and to “ensure the integrity of the fields." While there was no damage to the fields off Route 37, Schubiger said that the fields are closed periodically throughout the year because of rain. After the storm, however, they needed to be closed for a few more days than usual. The fields host events such as men’s and women’s softball leagues, as well as private parties, all …

Five helicopters signal president's arrival as crowd lines Passaic Avenue.
President Barack Obama, wearing a blue buttoned-down shirt, waved to a crowd along Passaic Avenue in Fairfield Sunday from the back of his black motorcade car as he sped toward Wayne and Paterson to tour flood-ravaged areas. Obama could be seen briefly in his motorcade after arriving at Essex County's airport in Fairfield in one of five military helicopters that landed between 12:25 and 12:45 p.m. Police presence was heavy all along Passaic Avenue, while sharpshooters could be seen on top of the buildings at the airport. A line of buses were parked in front of the landing area so the view of his disembarking was blocked from the crowds. Crowds of local residents lined parking lots and grassy lawns of businesses along Passaic Avenue to get…

Winding River, Cedar Glen, Surf and Stream campground and Pine Lake Park experienced flooding
Areas along the Toms River-Manchester border of Route 571 are a continued mess, with recent flooding, bridge damage and road closures adding a detour near Route 527. Parts of Pine Lake Park experienced flooding, including the area near the historic clubhouse. Patch captured video of Pine Lake as it breached its dam and flooded nearby streets. Flooding also caused officials to close the Route 571 bridge near the township's border with Toms River. As flood waters began to recede, a hole was visible near the northbound shoulder. County officials are expected to inspect the roadway when the water is gone. The roadway is closed and drivers are being detoured northbound on Route 571 to Route 70 eastbound and then southbound on to Route 527. …

Winding River Park fields underwater, and roads on both sides of river affected
A rising Winding River has caused portions of major roads to close due to flooding in West Dover, Pleasant Plains and along the border with Manchester today. In addition, township parks and the Municipal Utility Authority rushed to Winding River Park today as the river flooded ballfields and trails and compromised an MUA generator there, officials said. Elevated river levels has caused at least two closures along Route 571 today, with county crews unlikely to be able to repair the affected areas until Tuesday at the earliest. Bridges on two stretches of the county roadway are currently closed to vehicular traffic due to the continued effects of Hurricane Irene, which has compromised the pavement along both spans. "The water got really high…
