What the first devestating week looked like from my Mantoloking Road vantage point

It’s been a week since Hurricane Sandy hit and like many others, we still have no electricity at my house off Mantoloking Road. Our neighborhood is humming with the sound of generators, but I’ve been worried about the silent households ever since the temperatures dropped. In the past week, I (like you) have seen a lot, starting with a house strewn in the middle of Gale Road. A homeowner there said it washed across the bay and through the marsh onto his low lying street—a street that still reeked of diesel fuel on Thursday. Homeowners were shoveling thick, smelly muck from their driveways like it was snow that day. They thanked me for stopping and listening, even though that’s all I did. Flooded in Silverton: 'This Is Un-livable'

Holiday on the Bay residents have to deal with the effect of the storm surge filling their homes with over 3 feet of bay water.

Nick D'Anton, of Toms River, rented an apartment in the Holiday on the Bay complex for his family of 4. Now, they are facing the horrible aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Volunteer to Help Post-Sandy Clean-Up Efforts

Gov. Chris Christie has activated the New Jersey volunteer emergency response hotline (1-800-JERSEY-7).

If you'd like to lend a hand in the post-Sandy clean-up, the state of New Jersey volunteer emergency response hotline has been activated. "This hotline was established earlier this year to enhance the state's emergency responsiveness by harnessing New Jerseyans' strong spirit of service," according to a press release from the office of Governor Chris Christie. The number to call is 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397); backup hotline numbers are: 609-775-5236 or 908-303-0471. JCP&L Warns Power Could Be Out For 10 Days

Utility company says its hiring extra contractors, urges residents to be prepared

Residents should be prepared for power outages of up to 10 days from the anticipated impact of Hurricane Sandy, according to a release from the parent company of JCP&L. FirstEnergy Corp, which owns the local utility company along with several others on the East Coast, said in a release that the oncoming storm could wreak havoc with the electrical system and residents should be prepared to be without power for more than a week. The company is securing outside utility crews, electrical contractor and tree trimmers to assist a beefed up response crew and support workers to help restore power as soon as possible throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland, according to the release. “Depending on the severity of the storm's impact on the …
