GOP Incumbents Sweep Ocean County Races

Little, Bartlett, Polhemus cruise to re-election

Republican incumbents coasted to re-election Tuesday night, preserving the GOP's control of the freeholder board and sheriff's office. Voters re-elected longtime GOP freeholders Gerry Little and John C. Bartlett Jr. and Sheriff William L. Polhemus by wide margins, with 99 percent of votes reported at 11:30 p.m. Unofficially, Little and Bartlett captured 111,630 votes and 117,495 votes, respectively, far exceeding the totals recorded for Democratic candidates Joseph Grisanti (74,261) and Pat Barndt (71,738). Independent challengers Scott Newman and Tracy Caprioni each struggled to capture 1 percent of votes cast, with 3,510 and 3,828 votes, respectively. Dems Select Two Freeholder Candidates

Former Jackson Mayor, local Realtor will run against longtime incumbents

A newly chosen Democrat ticket for Ocean County freeholder will pit former Jackson mayor and local attorney Joseph Grisanti and Beachwood Realtor Patricia Barndt against Republican incumbents John C. Bartlett, Jr. and Gerry P. Little. The November race saw changes after Democrats George Cevasco and Bonnie Verga withdrew as candidates. Kevin Barron, chairman of the Candidate Screening Committee for the Ocean County Democrats, said the pair withdrew for personal reasons. "We appreciate their interest and are sorry they weren't able to run, but we are excited and energized about Patricia Barndt and Joseph Grisanti," Barron said. County Offering Flu Shots Every Thursday in January

Don't let the flu sneak up on you this winter, get your shot at the local health department.

The county health department has another round of flu shot appointments available, every Thursday in January from 3 to 6 p.m. at the county health department. Ocean County Freeholder Director Gerry P. Little is urging all residents over the age of 6 months to get seasonal flu shots. The Ocean County Health Department will be offering shots every Thursday during the month of January (Jan 5, 12, 19, 26) from 3 to 6 p.m. at its main headquarters at 175 Sunset Avenue, Toms River. Little said that he recommends using the sessions for children under age of 5 who attend a licensed childcare center or preschool facility to get their mandatory shot. Gerry Little Named Ocean Freeholder Director

John Bartlett to serve as deputy director in 2012, Vicari sworn into 11th term on board

Ocean County freeholders pledged Wednesday to continue to deliver the most services at the lowest cost to residents while selecting new leadership for 2012. Gerry P. Little was unanimously selected to serve as freeholder director, and John C. Bartlett was named deputy director at the board's annual reorganization meeting, held in the county Administration Building. Longtime Freeholder Joseph Vicari, who served as director in 2011, moved down the dais after being sworn in to his 11th term on the board. Little and Bartlett praised Vicari's leadership in front of a standing-room-only crowd filled with municipal and county officials as well as Congressmen Christopher Smith and Jon Runyan. Gerry Little to be Freeholder Director in 2012

Current deputy director will lead Ocean County board next year; Bartlett to serve as deputy director

Ocean County Freeholder Gerry P. Little is expected to lead the county's governing body when it reorganizes next week, it was announced Wednesday. Little, a Surf City resident, served as deputy director in 2011 and director in 2006. He has served on the freeholder board since 2003, when he was appointed following the death of James J. Mancini, a fellow Long Beach Island resident. John C. Bartlett, a Pine Beach resident, will serve as deputy director in 2012. "I am looking forward to being director of the board in 2012," said Little, in a statement.
