Ohio Charity Unloads Donations at Toms River Pantry [VIDEO]

The People's Pantry on Fischer Boulevard has helped families since Sandy struck

Superstorm Sandy recovery in Toms River received some out of state help this week when an Ohio-based charity came to town with a trailer full of donations.  The People's Pantry, managed by the Toms River Regional Schools Special Education PTA, was established following Sandy to help families in need. On Thursday, a truckload of help came from Hope Always Lives On, or HALO Foundation, based in Akron, Ohio. "I'm overwhelmed," said Mayor Thomas Kelaher, who was on-hand for the delivery. "It's one more example of the great spirit of volunteerism in this country. It renews your faith in human nature." The tractor trailer that brought the goods to Toms River is known as the Road Scholar 93 Cents for Flight 93 trailer. It was designed by the HALO…

JCP&L Rate Hike Hearings Wednesday

Utility company petitioning state board for consumer rate increase

The state Board of Public Utilities is scheduled to hold a pair of hearings on Wednesday on a proposed rate increase for Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L). The first meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Freehold Township Municipal Building, at Schanck and Stillwell Corner roads. The second meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the same location. The utility company, roundly criticized for its response during Hurricane Sandy and the nor’easter that followed, wants a rate increase of 4.5 percent in its effort to raise $603 million the company says it needs to repair infrastructure damaged in hurricane’s Sandy and Irene. The company faces opposition. "We will speak for the hundreds of ratepayers who are tired of paying more for less service…

JCP&L Upgrading Emergency Communications

Utility installing components at operations center in Morristown

JCP&L is taking steps to improve its ability to communicate with first responders during a large-scale emergency.  The utility will install components of the New Jersey Preparedness Emergency Communication Network at its regional dispatching operations in Morristown and Red Bank, spokesman Ron Morano said Thursday. The facilities manage the daily work on the company's electrical system and provide coordination when repair crews are dispatched during widespread power outages. “Participating in this system will enhance our ability to share real-time critical information with our customers, communities and first responders during emergency situations,” JCP&L President Don Lynch said in a release. “Joining this system is one of the many things…

JCP&L is an awful utility company but one we all have to deal with. It will never change. They used to be a great company but once First Energy bought them it has never been the same. UPDATE: Power Restored to Most in Toms River

Submit your storm photos and videos to this article

After over 1,750 Toms River JCP&L customers were reported without power Wednesday afternoon, the utility shows at 9 p.m. that fewer than five remain in the dark. JCP&L services 47,400 customers in Toms River. The utility urges residents to stay away from any power lines should they fall. TELL/SHOW US: Is your power out? Have you seen any flooding? How are traffic and road conditions? Upload your photos and videos to this article. A transformer blew and wires could be seen arcing along Route 35 South near Toms River's Ocean Beach Shores neighborhood, as seen in this Patch video report on storm conditions at the Shore.  Power outages could last for 24 hours or longer because of the severe weather, according to JCP&L. "We recommend that our …

JCP&L Preparing for Arriving Storm

Utility Company bringing in extra crews to combat outages.

With at least a few inches of snow expected to fall in our area and strong winds blowing through JCP&L is preparing for any possible power outages with the approaching storm. According to information provided by Howell Township Manager Helene Schlegel the company has already taken several steps to prepare for the storm that could include not only precipitation but also winds with gusts of up to 60 MPH.  JCP&L said they are also taking the following additional steps: • Bringing in more than 120 line personnel and hazard responders from FirstEnergy’s Ohio utilities to support restoration efforts  • Securing 120 tree contractor crews to respond to tree-related conditions  • Communicating with emergency management officials, state officials, …

UPDATE: Freeholder Wants Utility Companies To Waive Fees For Residents Left Homeless Or Displaced By Storm

Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs working on survey to address the problem

Call it adding insult to injury. That's Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari's reaction to utilities that continue to send bills to Superstorm Sandy victims who may not even have a home left or one they can live in. "If you lost your home, it no longer exists," he said at the Feb. 21 Board of Freeholders meeting. "But you are still getting a bill." Vicari said he has already spoken to Jersey Central Power and Light representatives, who have agreed to make corrections in bills sent to residents who lost their homes or are displaced. "Adjustments will be made," he said. "We are working on that. We hear what people are saying." Many residents who have been displaced are now actually being double billed - first for utility usage in homes they can no …

Utility Pole Replacement Started in Ortley Beach

Crews working south to north to replace Sandy-damaged poles

Utility pole replacement in Ortley Beach has begun at the southernmost portion of Harding Avenue, according to JCP&L. The utility company has been working since Feb. 1 to replace poles damaged by Superstorm Sandy, working from the south to the north, according to an alert sent by Toms River officials. Service will be restored to those areas without power as lines are replaced. "It is important to note that JCP&L will install the new poles and extend the power lines as far east as possible but there will be some areas that will not be able to be serviced at this time due to the conditions on the ground," reads a statement issued by the township. Some residents were allowed to return to their Ortley homes on Feb. 4 provided that they have …

JCP&L, Township Working to Rebuild Ortley Power Grid

East section of Ortley Beach remains without power; those in Middle and West can have power restored after passing inspection

Though sections of Ortley Beach have had power restored, a portion of the electrical system there was "substantially" impacted by Hurricane Sandy and must be rebuilt. "JCP&L continues to work with the township on its master plan to rebuild the 'East' section before company facilities can be rebuilt in order to allow service restoration to begin," reads a statement released by the township. No time frame on how long those repairs will take was provided. Ortley residents, unlike others on the barrier island, are unable to return to their homes full time until utility and road repairs are completed. On Tuesday, the utility company said that the Middle and West sections of Ortley have been energized, and customers there can have service …

JCP&L Announces Power Restoration in Two Ortley Beach Sections

East section of Ortley Beach still remains without electricity

Customers that had their meter reset now have service," reads an advisory notice sent through email and text message by the Toms River officials Tuesday morning. "We will continue to reset meters as inspections are received." All areas of the barrier island except for portions of Mantoloking and the Ortley east section are energized, according to JCP&L. The utility has posted instructions for having service restored after Sandy on its website. Though many on the barrier island were allowed to return to their homes full time Monday, those living in Ortley…

JCP&L Says It Will Improve Communication With Towns During Storms

Utility company lists communication enhancements

Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) is saying that it will improve its communication with towns during "significant storm events," after the utility company was criticized by many municipal officials after Hurricane Sandy. JCP&L announced new practices and upcoming technology improvements at meetings on Jan. 3 in Eatontown and Morristown with members of the League of Municipalities, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the New Jersey State Police. A news release from JCP&L states that the communication enhancements will include: "We are committed to continuous improvement for our customers and welcome the opportunity to work with state, county and municipal officials over the next several months as we implement these new …

Just gotta ask yourself....why didn't we lose Natural Natural Gas during Sandy????? I think we all know the answer....it was because most of their stuff is underground. Trees falling and wind blowinghad no effect on our Gas Service.... SO WHY THEN doesn't JCPL spend the money to put all of their lines underground ???? In the long run it would save them money in restoration efforts...... Gas   more ›
