Police, Firefighters Raise More Than $1,000 for Point Boro Girl

Allie Ciancia, 10, suffers from rare kidney disease

Thanks to a bunch of local police officers and firefighters, a Point Borough family with an ill child has a lot more help and hope than they had before. A charity softball game played by the Point Pleasant Policemen's Benevolent Association and the Point Beach volunteer firefighters raised $1,145 for Allie Ciancia, who is suffering from a rare kidney disease. Ruthi Grabowski, Allie's grandmother, said she and the family greatly appreciate the efforts of the police, firefighters and all the residents who attended and donated. "Last night was perfect," said Grabowski, a Toms River resident, on Monday night. The game was played Sunday night at the Lakewood Blue Claws stadium in Lakewood, following a Blue Claws game. Letter: Help Beachwood Woman Afflicted With Kidney Disease

Local woman has battled Wegner's Granulomatosis for two decades

Amanda Cimino has spent every single night for the past six years hooked up to a dialysis machine. The machine fills her stomach with medicated fluid, dwells there for one hour, then drains. This process goes on every night for eight hours. Amanda is dependent on peritoneal dialysis for her survival. Peritoneal dialysis is a process in which a surgically-implanted catheter in her stomach attaches to a machine and removes toxins and fluid from her body. This procedure is done every night at home. Unfortunately, after six years, the dialysis and kidney failure has taken a toll on her body. Her kidney failure has caused hyperparathyroidism, which depletes the calcium in your bones.
