PBS Special Focuses on Toms River Students, Teachers

Driving Jersey episode will air Labor Day night

An episode of Driving Jersey that will be airing on Labor Day on PBS (NJTV) at 10:30 p.m.will put the spotlight on Toms River and Manahawkin educators and students, and others schools across the state. The episode, Education, is described as "a celebration of sorts of public school educators in the state." Steve Rogers, who is the producer and director of the series, told the Patch: "We traveled from Weehawken down to Manahawkin talking to educators and their students and the result is a really beautiful look at some folks and some kids who are refreshing and real and doing and have done some wonderful things. " When Rogers lost his job, he hit the road and began finding people who were willing to tell their stories. The result was the …

Letter: American Dream Becoming Unattainable for Many

Kyrillos releases statement on Labor Day

Letter as submitted by Candidate for U.S. Senate Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-Monmouth): Today, we remember and honor the sacrifices made by hardworking Americans to achieve social, political and economic progress.  Through their efforts they forged a movement that made possible the American Dream and opportunity through hard work.  Sadly, the American Dream for many is becoming unattainable and the idea that through hard work one can build their own future is quickly becoming uncertain. Americans are suffering through the worst economic recovery since the Great Depression.  Today, unemployment continues to be above 8%, 23 million Americans are unemployed, underemployed or not looking for work and more Americans are living in poverty.  Thanks …

With Band's Help, Celebrating a 'Shore Local' Labor Day

Shorty Long rocks their last 'shore' show of the season

It was about 11:30 p.m. Sunday night when Shorty Long and the Jersey Horns broke into their finest rendition of "The Jitney Hit Me" while playing their last show of the unofficial summer season in Surf City. The song is a humorous take on an accident involving the famed Atlantic City public bus system and an unlucky pedestrian. Minutes before, lead singer and guitarist John Kern gave a shout-out to the Ocean County Patch sites and, as a bonus, this reporter. For tourists, Labor Day weekend means a return to their "normal," heading north up the Garden State Parkway or west on routes 72 and 70, where work, school and all the other aspects of upper-middle-class Americana await. For Shore locals, the holiday weekend is one where a breath of …

What's Open, What's Closed for Labor Day?

Federal holiday for government, post offices

Government offices, courts, schools, libraries, post offices and many banks will be closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday. All county facilities other than parks will be closed. All branches of the Ocean County Library are closed. Toms River's recycling pickup is canceled on Monday. If your collection day falls on one of these days or after, your recycling and garbage will be collected one day later. This will follow through for the whole week, until Friday's collections are completed on the next day, Saturday. Garbage collection today is also canceled. Town hall is closed but municipal parks are open and beaches are staffed. The Motor Vehicle Commission offices, inspection stations and testing centers are closed Labor Day.

Not Just a Beach Day: The Origins of Labor Day

Although the U.S. Department of Labor simply recognizes Labor Day for its celebration of America's workers, it was actually born amid labor unrest

Locally it may mark the unofficial end of summer, but the national holiday of Labor Day has its roots in workers' rights. More than 100 years after the first observance of Labor Day, it is still not clear who exactly proposed the holiday, but the measure was signed begrudgingly amid a period of labor unrest. The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882. During that time, as longer work hours and pay cuts were imposed, laborers began protecting themselves by unionizing. The holiday was recognized in 1882 by the Central Labor Union in New York City. The Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal consisting of a demonstration and a picnic, the Department of Labor said. By 1884, 23 other states adopted the holiday. On …

PHOTOS: Labor Day At The Shore

A trip to the Seaside Heights boardwalk yields the usual amusements as well as police presence

Some of the sights during Labor Day Weekend on the boardwalk and boulevard of Seaside Heights and Seaside Park. It's Friday night and it's not packed as the season draws to an end. No traffic over the bridge from Toms River into the evening. Plenty of room to walk along the boardwalk and plenty of seats on the rides and in the pizzeria. After Irene, some of the signage of the boardwalk arcades and bars is a bit battered, with some neon or lightbulbs out and some marquee signs bent. The fireworks were postponed due to high tide continuing to come up abnormally high on the beach, leaving not enough sands to stage the fireworks from. Families, friends and couples of all ages were out, though, taking a ride on the Funtown Pier Ferris Wheel or …

Seaside Park Art Show a Labor Day Weekend Tradition

Show will kick off this weekend

The "last" walk on the beach, shore-house barbecue and drive down the Garden State Parkway; these are all hallmarks of a typical Jersey Shore Labor Day Weekend. But there is another time-honored tradition enjoyed by those beach-side vacationers seeking a more cultural outlet: the 39th annual Seaside Park Selected Arts and Crafts Show.  Held each year on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend on the lawn of Seaside Park Police Station at Central and Sixth, the event was started in 1972 by a Toms River art teacher, Kathy Larkin. In 1989, Anne Moyes took over its organization and has been doing so for twenty-two years. Featuring fine artists, jewelers, potters and artisans working in mixed media, wood, fiber and glass, the show has remained …

Special Garbage Collections for Irene Debris, But Recycling Canceled for Labor Day

Hurricane Irene's fallen branches should be placed curbside

Garbage collection is both ramping up to collect storm debris, and shutting down thanks to Labor Day on Monday. Brush collection will begin immediately, to pick up all the branches and debris after Hurricane Irene, said Toms River Township Mayor Tom Kelaher. He said the department of public works will immediately begin to pick up brush left curbside. However, if you think you can roll a giant fallen tree to the curb, public works won’t help you. You’ll have to only put out branches that are shorter than 4 feet long and no thicker than 6 inches, said the department of public works. And come Monday, Toms River Township Public Works Department will be collecting garbage only. Recycling will not be collected on Labor Day.  Recycling …

Beach Movies and an Antique Faire get you back into the swing of things for the last big summer weekend
