Point Beach Council Turns Down Snooki and JWoww

Council may consider charging for film permits

The Point Beach Council agreed unanimously on Tuesday night to not allow MTV to film the "Snooki and Jwoww" reality show on public property in town. Through the brief discussion about the MTV request for a permit to start shooting the two "stars" going out to local night spots, starting Thursday, Mayor Vincent Barrella said perhaps the council should think about charging for film permits. They are now free, said Point Beach Business Administrator Chris Riehl. He noted that the town charges the American Cancer Society to conduct a fundraiser on the boardwalk annually. "And yet, MTV would get a free pass," Barrella noted, adding the council should think about developing a fee for film permits. That prompted mention of the town's special …

Mayor: Toms River Parks Worth Highlighting

Mayor itemizes some of the park features in Toms River

Column as submitted by Mayor Thomas Kelaher: In my last article I highlighted the activities of our Public Works Department.  In this issue I would like to present our Department of Parks, Buildings, Grounds and Public Lands.  This department, of course, has township wide responsibility; as set forth in its title to be responsible for all township properties.  The obligation to look after our parks, in particular, is somewhat extensive and I would like to list all of the parks that come under the jurisdiction of this department:  The department has the obligation of maintaining the physical condition of all of the above mentioned parks; such as lawn mowing, fencing, lighting, security, maintenance of equipment such as swing sets, tennis …

Kelaher Begins Second Term as Mayor; Councilmen Hill, Sevastakis to Lead Council

Annual reorganization meeting sees parting words from Councilman McGuckin

2011 is over, but many of the same issues, projects and faces will be around in 2012, officials at the annual reorganization meeting of Toms River said this evening. Sworn into his second term, Mayor Thomas F. Kelaher laid out the agenda for the coming year. He said he expects the 2012 budget to again be challenging to put together, in that state aid levels have fallen off dramatically over his last term. However, the mayor pointed to 2011 as a year of great cooperation and hard work in spite of financial obstacles. Kelaher said that they literally weathered the storm in 2011, facing the additional cost of blizzards while being forced to keep budgets under a 2 percent cap. 2012 Kelaher said the significant financial hurdles of 2011 were …

From the Desk of Toms River Mayor Thomas Kelaher

Mayor explains some highlights from the past weeks

Submitted by Mayor Thomas Kelaher: Last week I attended the funeral service of Bud Aldrich, former member of the Township Committee for eight years, two years of which he served as the mayor of Toms River. Bud did an outstanding job during the eight years that he served this township, and will be remembered not only for that service to the town, but also for his 35 years as a founding Board of Directors member of the Toms River YMCA.  In addition to his success as a businessman in Toms River, Bud also found time to be a Scoutmaster of many years for a local Boy Scout Troop.  Days before, I attended the Toms River Fire Department funeral service for long-time fire fighter and retired Toms River Fire Dispatcher Ernest “Stubby” Stubbington. …

As you are the nominal leader of TR, I respectfully ask if you can add "vision" to your duties. Your article shows that much of your time is taken by day-to-day items, but an overall PLAN is needed to improve our township. For example, while you see the downtown business district outside your office window, I think many more TR residents and thousands of visitors see Rt. 37. The multiple eyesores…   more ›
