Structure at Intermediate East grounds was damaged in Hurricane Sandy
After deflating from damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy, the Bennett Indoor Athletics Complex is back in use and hosting two months' worth of events. On Friday, the facility will host Greater Middlesex Conference track events, followed up on Saturday with Ocean and Monmouth County relays. Regional and state events are scheduled there through the end of February, according to the facility's calendar. "For Toms River, that means all those parents are coming in," said school district spokeswoman Tammi Millar. Next week, over 9,000 student athletes are expected to participate in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association relays. NJSIAA decision paves the way for home-schooled students to participate
Local public school districts must develop a policy if they choose to allow home-schooled students to participate in district sports, according to the state scholastic sports governing body. On Nov. 9, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association made an about-face on a previous, long-standing policy that disallowed homeschooled students from participating in scholastic sports programs run out of their home districts. However, the choice rests with the local district. They are not mandated to allow home-schooled students to participate but must develop guidelines for their participation if they do. District maintaining programs as others institute fees, cuts programs
While school districts throughout New Jersey have been forced to cut subvarsity athletic teams or institute pay-to-play programs, the Toms River Regional School District continues to offer one of the most detailed and progressive interscholastic athletic portfolios in the state. “We’ve been very fortunate,’’ said Athletic Director Joseph Arminio. “We get great support from the taxpayers, the community and the administration.
