Toms River Schools Set to Make Appointments, Approve Contracts

Nearly all the annual contracts will expire this month as Toms River Regional moves to November election schedule and January reorganization meeting

This time last year, the Toms River Regional School Board was holding its annual reorganization meeting, appointing professional contracts that expire each June and swearing in a board president after an April election day. This month's school board meeting will have some of those annual chores, while other votes on contracts and appointments will come in January, now that school board elections were moved to November. Professional appointments operate on an annual contract and will come to an end this month unless the school board votes to extend the contract or decide who will fill it until January's reorganization. Still other contracts will not be shifted to the January reorganization and will instead still operate under a school year …

Letter: Ritacco Fiasco Creating Added Expense to District

Residents says school board could have acted differently

Letter to the Editor: When former Superintendent of Schools Michael Ritacco was arrested by the federal government in a 27 count indictment for tax evasion and bribery in 2010, the school board wrongly granted him his retirement, which allowed him to received his pension and benefits immediately. Under the law, the board could and should have suspended him indefinitely without pay pending the outcome of his trial. This would certainly have limited the many delays Mr. Ritacco was granted for his upcoming trial.  It also would have saved the district the embarrassment and expense the school district is now facing since being sued by Mr. Ritacco for $63,000 in additional benefits that he says that he is owed. Each current member of the Toms …

The low cafeteria staff that has no benefits, pays dearly. We took a freeze while management received. Now please take a quarter and be happy!! We taxpayers paid for some board members legal fees because they sided with Mr Ritacco. They want us the support staff that feed the kids to get as little as possible, while the lady in Cafe 1144 still gets everything. She even cost a good man a job/   more ›

NJ School Boards Association Advises Toms River As Ritacco Trial Approaches

NJSBA rep. says to limit statements to media, use spokesperson, not rush to televise meetings

A representative from the New Jersey School Boards Association led discussion at the Toms River Regional School's policy committee tonight, advising the school board on how to proceed amid the complexities of the coming criminal trial of the district's former superintendent. The discussion: don't individually address the media, use a spokesperson, weigh the option of televising meetings. Kathy Winecoff, a Field Representative for Monmouth County and some Ocean County schools representing the New Jersey School Boards Association, was in attendance to make recommendations to the Toms River board. Winecoff said that as the trial of former Superintendent Michael Ritacco begins in less than a month, the board may find itself in unprecedented …

School Board Candidates Now Have Until June 5 to File

Deadline would have been today for an April election, but board moved election to November

The move from an April school board election to a November one means new deadlines to run as a candidate. Now, candidates have until June 5 to file a petition to run in November, said the county clerk's office. Today was the deadline under the April system. Lakewood will still have an April school board election and budget vote, but nearly every other school district in Ocean County decided to move its school board election to November. That also means the Toms River Regional school budget will no longer be before voters and will instead be decided by the school board this spring, unless the school budget grows more than 2 percent. Only if the school district presents a budget more than the 2 percent cap will it be required to put the …

School District Files 'Dishonesty Policy' Insurance Claim Regarding Ritacco

Toms River Regional trying to recoup alleged funds lost to bribery, fraud under former Superintendent Ritacco, who is awaiting trial

Toms River Regional Schools has filed an insurance claim, in an attempt to recoup funds that former superintendent Michael J. Ritacco is accused of taking in a alleged bribery kickback scheme. The claim is on the "dishonesty policy" of the school district's insurance package, which was taken out to specifically protect the district in the event of theft, illegal wrongdoing or ethical violations, said school board attorney Thomas Monahan. The claim was filed Feb. 15, said Business Administrator William Doering, and it is through the district's insurance provider, Traveler's Insurance, through broker Connors Strong. The parameters of the dishonesty policy claim — such as total amount claimed, potential payment or other policy terms — was not…

Yes that is the agenda we see, but what goes on behind the close doors that the public is not allowed to hear. Come on they are even afraid to televise what goes on in the open. The school has their own TV station, but they will not televise this. There are people who can not make it to these meetings and would like to know what is going on. Plus if you go there are administrators all throughout …   more ›

NJDOE Clarifies Issues Surrounding New School Elections Legislation

Toms River Regional has yet to decide whether it will switch to November

A separate section of November’s ballot will be set aside for school board candidates, and the county clerk will now be in control of the school board elections, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) said on Thursday, Jan. 26. The school district will also save a significant amount of money by moving the elections. The NJDOE released answers to the frequently asked questions concerning its new policy this week. School board elections will remain non-partisan and the county clerk will design the ballot, the state said. Toms River Regional has not yet voted on whether to keep April elections or move school board elections to November. Under the new law, the clerk has the “authority to determine the specifications for, and the final …

I agree. Do you think that the elections of the school board in this district is going to be more fair that it was when the elections were held in April? I would like to know what school district that the State Department of Education is talking about being non political. We know that they aren't talking about the "GOLD STAR" standard here in Toms River. There isn't a district that works any …   more ›
