Volunteer fire company selling 300 tickets in its 2013 raffle

With just 300 tickets for sale, the odds of winning could be in your favor. The Silverton Volunteer Fire Company is raffling off a 2013 Harley-Davidson FLHX Street Glide motorcycle to raise funds for the organization. Tickets are $100 each and can be purchased by contacting Assistant Chief Gary Tattersall at 732-255-3244 or gtattersall@trfire.org. Email requests for tickets can also be sent to station29@trfire.org. The winner will be drawn during the fire company's sixth annual Fall Festival and Poker Run on Oct. 5. Captain Michael Cocco said that those interested should purchase tickets before they sell out. He also thanked the community for supporting the volunteer department.

Former chief was active with the department until his death last week
Robert "Bob" Weil, the last surviving Charter Member of the Silverton Volunteer Fire Company, died last week at age 95. Born in Elizabeth in 1917, Weil had served as a firefighter in Silverton since the fire company's inception 62 years ago. The oldest volunteer firefighter in Ocean County, he continued to be active with the company up until a few weeks before falling ill, according to Capt. Michael Cocco. "This marks a very said day for the Silverton Volunteer Fire Company," Cocco said. Weil, who also once served as the company's chief, died on April 19 at the home of his step-daughter Carol McClanahan, surrounded by his family. The following is a reproduction of the 2013 installation ceremony program for the Silverton Volunteer Fire Company: Hurricane Sandy delivered a devastating blow to New Jersey but particularly to our community. Toms River Township is New Jersey’s 8th largest community of 43 square miles and over 90,000 people with 25 percent of the towns’ 40,000 residential units being damaged and many were totally destroyed. While the barrier islands were a concern no one could ever imagine the damage that occurred on the mainland along the Barnegat bay Silver Bay, Kettle Creek, Goose Creek and the Toms River. Volunteer fire company recognized by Township Council Tuesday
Fire companies from Maryland were honored by Toms River officials this week for their efforts to help Silverton recover from Hurricane Sandy's wrath. During a Christmas party last Saturday, members from numerous fire companies in Maryland donated 700 toys to Silverton families in need this holiday season. That donation marked "an historic event" in Toms River, according to a resolution honoring those who helped. "It was something like I've never seen before," said Councilmember Maria Maruca.
