This week's snow forecast from National Weather Service, a local meteorologist and the Magic Eight Ball, all say yes.
The sky is a bright blue without a cloud in sight. We can guess there will be no snow in Toms River today, but how is the rest of the week looking? In a particularly un-snowy winter, will this week be the one? Will we finally be able to make a snow ball...or even...a snow man? We asked the National Weather Service, Toms River resident and meteorologist Scott Derek, and the Magic Eight Ball. For both the NWS and Scott, some signs point to a Wednesday snow, if at all. The verdict from NWS is "chance of rain/snow." That sounds wet, and not very pretty. Guess my plans for Frosty the Snowman will have to wait. What does Magic Eight Ball say? The prediction for snow this week is: "Absolutely!" That sounds pretty certain, what do you think? Take …

Magic Eight Ball says "No way!"
It's been a winter marked by negligible snowfall so far. But there's still plenty of winter left, even though some of these days it feels as though spring has arrived in Toms River. So what's the forecast for this week? Will we see the first green sprigs of daffodils break through the not-so-frozen ground or will that same ground be covered with snow? Is it going to snow this week in Toms River? We asked the National Weather Service, the Farmer's Almanac, The Weather Channel, and the Magic Eight Ball. The forecast: no snow. Magic Eight Ball was pretty sure this week. "No way!" it answered, when we asked if snow was going to fall. National Weather Service also said no way. Though for a portion of the overnight a hazardous weather outlook …

Forecast for Jan. 23 to Jan. 30
So, the score in our weekly prediction of will it snow, is 0 for 1. Last week all our forecasters said it wasn't going to snow, but slightly more than one inch of snow to slush fell on Toms River. In our weekly poll, which closed early Wednesday morning, readers were split last week about whether they thought it was going to snow: 20 said it would be unseasonably warm, 19 said regardless of the weather they'd be hibernating, 17 predict bitter cold and four people voted it would snow. Well, it snowed. But how are things looking this week? More white stuff falling from the sky, or just wintery rain or dry skies? We asked the National Weather Service, the Old Farmer's Almanac, and our Magic Eight Ball. The forecast is mixed. The Old Farmer's …

Winter weather advisory in effect for Ocean and Monmouth into tomorrow
Ocean and Monmouth counties can expect up to 3 inches of snow over the next 36 hours, meteorologists say, but warming temperatures are expected to change the precipitation to rain as the approaching storm winds down. A winter weather advisory will be in effect for both counties from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, said meteorologist Kristin Kline of the National Weather Service's Mount Holly station. At the Shore, the snow "will begin after midnight tonight and continue through the early part of tomorrow morning," Kline said. "Then it's going to change over to sleet, and there may even be a brief period of freezing rain." (The difference? Sleet falls as frozen precipitation – think tiny ice pellets bouncing off your windshield. Freezing rain …

The all-important question for week of Jan. 16
In the thick of winter, especially after a winter like the last one, the question of if, when and how much snow could fall is important. Each week, Toms River Patch will be asking some sources to weigh in on whether this week we'll get some flakes. For the week of Jan. 16, we asked Toms River native and meteorologist Scott Derek if Toms River will get some snow. We asked the head meteorologist of NY NJ PA Weather, Steven DiMartino, too. And we asked a Magic Eight Ball. (Hey, it can't hurt.) The verdict: none of them said it's likely we're getting snow this week. DiMartino: "Little if any threat for snowfall this week. The best shot for a flurry or two is on Monday night into early Tuesday morning with a warm front approaching from the …

Just a dusting for Ocean County

Thursday, January 5, 2012
When was the first snow of the 2011-2012 winter for Toms River? Early morning, Jan. 5. Toms River and other parts of Ocean County saw its first snowflakes of the season around 1 a.m. this morning, with some roads just dusted over. Chances are the snow will have melted by the time you awake but the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook and had predicted scattered flurries with a low around 27 degrees. This time last year Ocean County was blanketed with several feet of snow. The township roads remained slick, and residents were stranded as it took days to dig out. The 2011-2012 winter had a more than $1.25 million price tag for snow removal. The first snow of this season is no comparison, but are you excited to see the …

Township naming contractors to plow, inspecting equipment
After a record-breaking winter with a $1.25 million price tag for snow response, Toms River township and other levels of government are working to prepare for possible snowy months ahead. That includes repairing plows and front loaders damaged in last year's Christmas blizzard, as well as naming contractors and upgrading technology on other fleets. For example, the township solicited bids to retrofit six public works trucks with snow plow equipment at its October meeting. Toms River township's contractor list for snow plowing services was also awarded in October, with hourly rates established from $83.50 to $169, depending on the type of equipment contracted (such as a plow versus a front loader and dump truck). The state Department of …

Starting off with some minor snow accumulations followed by rising temperatures throughout the remainder of the week

After being teased with near 70 degree temperatures last week, we will get another quick reminder that winter is not over yet. This is what we can expect throughout the remainder of this winter season as warm weather teases are followed quick cold blasts with minor snow accumulations. Monday will start off with light rain in the morning. Some mixed precipitation may occur during the overnight hours but this should not be a big disruption for the morning commute. Tuesday morning may be a bit more dicey. Our area may face accumulations of 1-to-3 inches of snow Monday night through Tuesday morning. I am leaning more toward 1 inch of snow unless the precipitation from this storm is able to make its way further north. This will be more of a …

Yet another winter storm dropped well over a foot of snow over the region. By now, we have learned that all you can do is grab a shovel, take a breath, and get ready for the next storm headed our way. Last night’s storm had everything from rain, sleet, and snow to thunder and lighting flashes. At times, two to three inch bands of snow pounded the region allowing accumulations to add up quickly. When the skies finally cleared, Philadelphia could add 17 inches to this winter’s snow total. New York City can tack on another 19 inches, making this the snowiest January ever recorded. Areas in the Jersey Shore region were not left out of the snow party. Brick Township received 10.6 inches and Point Pleasant added a not-so-pleasant total of 7.2 …

Coldest temperatures of the season: an icy Tuesday and possible snow
The week will bring some of the coldest temperatures this winter. There are two areas of concern: a system coming into the area that will bring some very messy weather and dangerous roadways. The weather system should begin as snow overnight but transition to sleet and freezing rain for the morning commute on Tuesday, causing potentially icy roads. Friday may bring a possible plowable amount of snow as a low-pressure system rides along the coast. forecasters are uncertain what Friday's system may bring.

If I never see snow again it will be to soon! I hate it! But don't be fooled. Some of our worst snow storms have been if Feb, and some in March as well. I remember snow on the ground on St. Valentines Day and St. Patrick's Day.Even once or twice on Easter. With 42 days till spring.....a lot can still happen. Don't put away the salt or shovel yet!   more ›
