An announcement as released by the Special Olympics New Jersey: In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, we hope that everyone is now safe and meeting the many challenges they face with help and support from friends and family. Our thoughts are with all of those who experienced a loss of any kind and we wish everyone the very best in the weeks and months ahead. Special Olympics New Jersey is moving forward with the organization and planning of the 20th Annual Seaside Heights Polar Bear Plunge. While we will face challenges with the location of this year’s event, we are prepared to make the necessary adjustments to ensure that we do conduct this year's plunge and at the same time make every effort to support the economy and restoration of Seaside …

Organizers of the 18th annual Seaside Heights Polar Bear Plunge, a fundraiser that benefits the Special Olympics of New Jersey, said more than 5,000 people took a swim on Saturday. Thousands more cheered from the beach as friends, relatives and co-workers braved chilly ocean temperatures to help support the cause.
Polar Bear Plunge is a huge event in Seaside on Saturday
Tomorrow, it will be the opposite of a disco inferno. Disco Infreezo will jump in the ocean. In fact, there will probably be several Santas, mustachioed men (and maybe some women), giant teddy bears and superheroes, and thousands more will join them, at the annual Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside Heights on Saturday, tomorrow. Teams have been raising money for months, in what is both a large scale charity event for the Special Olympics, a giant party and a chance for thrill seekers to brave the February waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Approximately four thousand took the plunge last year, many in elaborate costumes — including a big, teeth-chattering grin.
