UPDATE: Ex-Mayor Inteso Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion

Former Toms River Mayor Carmine C. Inteso Jr. pleaded guilty to tax evasion.

Former Toms River Mayor Carmine C. Inteso Jr. pleaded guilty today to tax evasion in Trenton federal court for failing to report hundreds of thousands of dollars of income from the insurance broker who was convicted for bribing school officials, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said. Inteso pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Joel A. Pisano to one count of tax evasion, Fishman said in a statement. Matthew Reilly, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney, said five other charges against Inteso were dismissed. Inteso, who held various offices in Toms River from 2002 through 2007, allegedly took a job as a contractor in Afghanistan after learning he was the target of the tax investigation and was taken into custody at New York’s John F. Kennedy …

Toms River Lost 20 Percent of Tax Base From Sandy - Mayor Says

Mayor Thomas Kelaher says Toms River lost 20 percent of tax base and the devastation raises questions about how it will be rebuilt.

Toms River lost 20 percent of its tax base after Hurricane Sandy struck in late October and it remains to be seen how the beachfront sections of the township will be rebuilt, Mayor Thomas Kelaher said. Kelaher questioned whether properties could be insured, a key element to obtaining mortgages that property owners may need to rebuild. Kelaher made his comments at a press conference on Friday with other officials at the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center on Fischer Boulevard. Gary Colton, public information officer from the Small Business Association, said the program is coordinating low-interest loans up to $200,000 for homeowners and businesses through FEMA.  Loans are also being provided up to $40,000 for personal property, which would …

Toms River To Crack Down on Invasive Plants

The Township Council introduced an ordinance to make property owners control invasive plants, such as spreading bamboo, ragweed, and other vegetation, from spreading to neighboring properties.

Toms River property owners need to watch what plants are growing in their yards, especially if it is a spreading species, such as bamboo, multi flora rose, kudzu or poison ivy or oak. The Township Council introduced an ordinance Tuesday, Nov. 13, that requires property owners to keep vegetation within their boundaries or face costs for removal and fines.  The amount of those fines governed under state law could not immediately be determined, but a 2002 letter that the state sent to judges showed that the maximum for violating municipal ordinances could be as high as $1,250. Several New Jersey towns have recently taken action about controlling invasive plants, particularly spreading bamboo that can cause property damage. Spreading bamboo …

Letters to the Editor

Letter: Central Voice Needed for Toms River Barrier Island

Information is not thorough, resident says

Letter to the Editor submitted by Toms River resident Carol Brown: I saw you posted an article via the Toms River Patch regarding the Seaside Heights plan to allow residents back to their homes.  This is great information, but the real story is the inconsistency and utter restriction among beach communities allowing residents to go back to their homes.  I have been gleaning lots of information from some internet and Facebook sites.  For instance, the Mantoloking Police Department post a daily update on their website telling its residents what is going on with cleanup, and they were already allowed full access to their properties and got to do what they needed to secure their homes.  Normandy Beach has done a similar thing for the Normandy …

There was a time I viewed Coach products as an asset in personal style satisfaction. Unfortunately, your repeated crude and unwanted advertising of Coach products in reader's comments on the Patch indicates that Coach can no longer compete in the legitimate marketplace and must resort to the styles and practices of its once former knockoff sales outlets. Since the handles used on the Patch for …   more ›

Hurricane Sandy and Toms River: Election Day Updates

Updates for Ortley Beach residents and more

Update from Mayor Tom Kelaher: Barrier Island residents Mayor Kelaher and Chief Mastronardy attended a meeting this morning with the NJ Department of Transportation, Lavallette, Brick and Seaside Heights authorities. The DOT has declared that the roadways on the barrier island North of Seaside Heights are unsafe. They have found over 22 sink holes some being as much as 8 feet deep. The DOT is aggressively attempting to stabilize the situation. The pending Nor'Easter is of great concern and it is unsure how it may affect their progress. This situation will directly impact the development of any type of public access to the Island. Until the DOT gives us permission, we can't allow access onto the barrier island. No timetable has been set. …

Fire Prevention Week: 'Have Two Ways Out'

Fire Prevention Officials suggest importance of family fire drills

Column as submitted by Robert Yaiser, Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention: The Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention reminds residents that last year over 2500 Americans lost their lives to the devastation of fire. In most cases, the home did not have a working smoke detector. A sounding alarm gives you the extra seconds you need to get out of your home safely.  Children in Preschool and up are capable of following a simple fire drill. Yet many families do not have a detailed escape plan from their home, and those that do usually do not practice them. We encourage families to draw a basic diagram of their homes, making all the windows and doors, and plan two ways of escape from each room. Consider various scenarios when creating your plan …

Toms River Entrepreneurs

Burger 25 Expanding To Third Location, Route 37 in Toms River

Entrepreneur banking on prime location and prime burgers

When the owners of Burger 25 sat down to map out their concept for fresh, fast-casual food, they didn’t plan on opening up three locations within one year — but sometimes you can’t control what falls on your plate. “Sometimes you have to be aggressive,” said Andre Braxton, an owner of Burger 25. He said the company opened its first location in May 2011 on Route 70, in Brick, and the second location opened up on in November 2011, on Route 9, in Bayville. On June 18, Burger 25 will once again open its doors at its newest location in Toms River. “We’re on a shoe-string budget, and somehow we’re pulling it off,” Braxton said. Shortly after opening in Bayville, Braxton said he planned to spend the next year growing the business. But then he …
