Family and friends and 1,600 graduates celebrated under sunny skies at the annual commencement at Ocean County College Thursday. More than 1,600 associates degrees were awarded at the main campus in Toms River.

OCC Now Offering Degree in Homeland Security

College also pushing for collaboration with Lakehurst base

Students interested in careers in the growing homeland security industry can now earn associates degrees in that field at Ocean County College. Gina Suriano, OCC’s Director of Resource Development, said the New Jersey Council of County Colleges approved the curriculum for the degree. Homeland security courses are now offered at the college. Those who earn the two-year degree at OCC will be able to use it to pursue a four-year degree at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, explained David Wolfe, senior assistant to OCC President Dr. Jon Larson. Veterans Connecting at College

OCC's Veterans Club growing in popularity

There is a surge of interest among hundreds of veterans attending Ocean County College in the once dormant Veterans Club. Credit for the turnaround goes to Michael Sparrow, who became the OCC coordinator of Veterans Affairs in September, according to leaders who have witnessed the transformation. “He’s totally changed how the veterans think, energized the club, no idea is too difficult,’’ said Col. Alan Smith, USMC Ret., an adjunct history instructor and training director for employer support of the National Guard and Reserve. “He’s given them leadership,’’ Smith added. Comparison of state's community college tuition

2010 tuition rose everywhere, including $2 a credit at OCC

With Ocean County College leaders resisting a tuition hike in their recent restructuring plan to bridge a $1.58 million budget gap, how does the tuition OCC students pay compare with what other community colleges are charging? First the bad news, tuition went up this year at all 19 community colleges in the state. At OCC the increase was $2 a credit, to $94, an increase of 2.2 percent. Only Atlantic Cape Community College increased its tuition less, 1.9 percent, a $1.80 per credit hike. The largest increase, 7 percent, or $6 a credit, was at Burlington County Community College, followed by 6.4 percent, also $6 a credit at Union County Community College.
