School District Plans Bus Purchases Using Bennett Bubble Funds

Enterprise funds raised at the indoor athletic complex will go toward purchasing six mini buses

Funds raised by the John Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex will be put toward purchasing new buses for Toms River schools.  About $1.2 million is in the district's enterprise fund, money raised through the operation of the "Bennett Bubble" at Intermediate East. Six mini buses will be purchased from that fund at a total cost of $394,000, according to the district.  "I think one of the great things about these enterprise funds is when you can purchase something that's directly relevant to the running of this school district," said schools Business Administrator William Doering at a district budget and finance committee meeting this week. "People see the connection between having these funds and using them for something that you'd otherwise be …

A Sign of Recovery, Bennett Bubble Reopens

The school district's inflated athletic bubble, critical to state high school sports and local businesses, reopened recently.

In the center of the complex student athletes mill about, waiting as they do between the lengthy delays typical to track and field meets. They’re unaware, as they should be, of one particular seam in the corner of the Toms River facility affectionately known as the Bennett Bubble. It’s darker than the others and stretches midway up the wall. Those who understand the importance of the indoor athletic complex not only to the community and its businesses, but to the state’s young athletes, are likely to recognize this one seam, a bit darker than all the others, as a scar left by Hurricane Sandy. The seam tore and the bubble burst. For a region devastated by Sandy, it could have been just another item on its list of destruction. But it’s come …

Why isnt the bubble open to the public, especially the seniors? Don't tell me it is because of liabilty! A waiver could cover that! Right now the elderly are limited to walking around inside the mall on cold wintery days, and on Sunday the mall isnt open until 1000. Full Schedule Ahead for Repaired Bennett Bubble

Structure at Intermediate East grounds was damaged in Hurricane Sandy

After deflating from damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy, the Bennett Indoor Athletics Complex is back in use and hosting two months' worth of events. On Friday, the facility will host Greater Middlesex Conference track events, followed up on Saturday with Ocean and Monmouth County relays. Regional and state events are scheduled there through the end of February, according to the facility's calendar. "For Toms River, that means all those parents are coming in," said school district spokeswoman Tammi Millar. Next week, over 9,000 student athletes are expected to participate in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association relays. Those families will spend money in town, dining and shopping locally, according to Millar.  "The…

Toms River School District Cost to Repair Bennett Bubble: $25K

Measure to repair the indoor track complex flattened by Hurricane Sandy approves school board vote unanimously

The cost of repair materials to the Bennett Athletic Center could come in at $800,000, but the Toms River Regional School District is hoping FEMA would pay for 75 percent of the cost after an insurance deductible, leaving the school district with a $25,000 bill. In a special board meeting Monday night, Toms River Regional school board heard from residents, Intermediate East staff and physical education teachers and coaches about whether to repair the flattened Bennett “Bubble,” which ripped as Hurricane Sandy’s high winds and power outages befell Toms River. The structure, on the Intermediate East campus, has lain flat since the storm, in what district officials said has risked the coming indoor track season as well as overcrowding of the …

It makes me laugh to see the absolute ignorance of adults when it comes to the battle between the welfare of your disposable income and the benefit something such as the bubble has on an ENTIRE state. You guys call it an "eyesore" but you can close your eyes while driving past it for all I care. You want financial security? Find yourself a job with a better payout. Can't find that job?
