Roads department updates list of closures post-Irene
Wondering on the status of county road closures and detours? Here is what the county is doing heading into Thursday. Late Wednesday these roads had been reopened: Expected to be reopened late Wednesday were: Still closed are: Some road are also closed at culverts, including:
Freeholders say county saved money by using in-house crews
Ocean County will spend less than $1.5 million repairing roads approaching county bridges, guard rails and streets near culverts under highways, a price that would have been two or three times that much had private contractors been used instead of county Road Department crews, according to Freeholder John P. Kelly. No county bridges were damaged, but the massive walls of water sent gushing downstream by rains from Hurricane Irene undermined roads approaching those spans, in some cases in Jackson Township, creating caverns under the asphalt that could have swallowed cars or even dump trucks. By Friday, county officials expect all of the county roads that are still closed to be repaired and open. They are located in Toms River at the …

Multiple road closures as you exit Route 37 to Oak Ridge put you further west back on Route 37
Follow along with me, if you will, on the most epic of journeys. What you might expect was a simple trip from Route 37 to Route 571 via Oak Ridge Parkway, is instead a cross-town trek of baffling proportions. One of the more confusing detours has been in place along the Oak Ridge Parkway for Hurricane Irene damage to roads there. It’s one that will inspire both déjà vu and vertigo. It’s straight out of a Kafka novel. It’s … not fun, to say the least. You hop off Route 37 and head north on Oak Ridge Parkway (Route 527). Extra points for you, if …
Winding River, Cedar Glen, Surf and Stream campground and Pine Lake Park experienced flooding
Areas along the Toms River-Manchester border of Route 571 are a continued mess, with recent flooding, bridge damage and road closures adding a detour near Route 527. Parts of Pine Lake Park experienced flooding, including the area near the historic clubhouse. Patch captured video of Pine Lake as it breached its dam and flooded nearby streets. Flooding also caused officials to close the Route 571 bridge near the township's border with Toms River. As flood waters began to recede, a hole was visible near the northbound shoulder. County officials are expected to inspect the roadway when the water is gone. The roadway is closed and drivers are being detoured northbound on Route 571 to Route 70 eastbound and then southbound on to Route 527. …

Multiple detours impacting traffic along Route 527, Hooper, Route 37, Fischer
Update, 2 p.m. Tuesday: Motorists now can travel through the intersection at West Water and Iron streets, as a detour has been removed and the traffic light restored. Update, 1 p.m.: Extensive flooding of the Winding River has forced the closure of the jughandle at Hospital Drive and Route 37 westbound. Traffic is backing up along Route 37 as motorists deal with the inconvenience, one of many found throughout downtown Toms River today. Motorists are instead being routed to the Cardinal Drive jughandle. Ambulances trying to access Community Medical Center have to make a left turn from Route 37. Traffic flow is impeded as authorities deal with downed trees, drooping power lines and residual flooding. Police cones currently block travel …
