Police said heavy rains affected search effort

Update: A report of a man who jumped off the Tunney Bridge Tuesday found nothing after three hours of searching the shallow area of Barnegat Bay. Toms River Police Department and fire companies conducted an early morning search effort looking for a male who reportedly jumped from the Tunney Bridge at 5 a.m. Tuesday morning.  "The witness, a 44 year old Island Heights man, observed the man jump from the bridge then yelled to him 'stay afloat …help is on the way'" said Police Chief Michael Mastronardy. Silverton fire boat meets up with relay team in Barnegat Bay off Cattus Island, Toms River

A relay of paddlers part of a memorial to Sept. 11 firefighters were met by Silverton Volunteer Fire Company’s fire boat yesterday, to show support and camaraderie as they row their way from Maryland to New York City. Silverton Fire Department Lt. Michael J. Cocco said several members met the kayakers from Fire Paddle 2011 out in the middle of Barnegat Bay near the Cattus Island and Silver Bay coves in Toms River. Fire Paddle 2011 is comprised of a team of firefighters completing a relay charity paddle that began Aug. 3 and is expected to end on Aug. 27 in New York City in time for the opening of the World Police and Fire Games 2011 and 9/11 memorial.
