Many homes in Green Island, while still standing, experienced devastating flooding
Five months after Superstorm Sandy, the storm's impact remains visible in Toms River's Green Island section. A storm surge from Sandy pushed bay waters into many homes, leaving residents questioning whether they should raise their homes or wait to rebuild as FEMA may update its flood maps. At first glance, Green Island homes for the most part appear habitable — but it's the inside that matters, as many homes needed to be gutted because of water damage. Temporary storage trailers sit in fronts of many homes in the area, as residents complete repairs. Signs for contractor services are posted on utility poles. Parts of Green Island still without power; houses devastated
Green Island residents have complained that they're still without power, even though Hurricane Sandy hit nearly three weeks ago. But many - or as many as 228 residents - also may be without a home. So say workers and recovery operators who are trying to clean up the wounded developments as it continues to recover from Sandy's destruction. Patch did a tour of the developments Wednesday, and found that the bay-area neighborhoods are recovering in a similar way to those of Ortley Beach and other waterfront communities. Grand jury hands up 24-count indictment against group
Five Toms River men have been indicted in connection with a string of burglaries in town that were committed between Dec. 8 and Jan. 31. Parker B. Egan, Michael Lanza, Joseph Sabato, Bobby L. Smith and Jesse L. Smith all were indicted in connection with nine burglaries in the Kettle Creek and Green Island sections of Toms River. The burglaries netted more than $4,000 worth of cash, jewelry, electronics, two pellet guns and prescription medication from the homes. Jesse L. Smith, 20, faces 19 counts -- 10 of third-degree burglary, eight of third-degree theft and one count of resisting arrest. He is being held in the Ocean County Jail, Toms River, on $75,000 bail, no 10 percent option. Egan, Lanza, Sabato each were indicted on single charges…

A boil water notice from yesterday's water main break is now lifted, says United Water
A boil water advisory in effect since Friday afternoon due to a water main break in Kettle Creek was lifted at 3:30 p.m. today. United Water of Toms River announced Saturday that the 1,100 customers under a precautionary boil water advisory can begin regular consumption. Tests confirmed that the water met safety standards while the main was being repaired, said United Water in an announcement. "It is no longer necessary for these residents to boil their water for cooking and drinking," said United Water in its announcement. The affected area included 40 streets in the Silverton and Money Island sections of Toms River: Kettle Creek Road, Green Island Drive, Grandview Drive, Bayview Drive, Channel and Anchorage roads were some of the …

One of Toms River's fallen heroes will be honored in perpetuity with a plaque at the Green Island Community Association. A dedication ceremony was held Saturday for the plaque that pays tribute to Army Sgt. James W. Harvey, who was killed in action on June 20 in the Ghazni province of Afghanistan. Harvey, 23, was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service in Afghanistan, where he had been deployed in January after joining the Army in January 2009. The ceremony’s introduction was given by Wayne Zakaras, president of the Green Island Community Association followed by a word of remembrance by Vice President Jeff Coley.
