Early morning blaze results in death of Lakewood resident
According to the Ocean County’s Prosecutor’s Office, a fire which occurred early this morning has claimed the life of a male Lakewood resident. Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford issued a statement concerning the fire. “At approximately 12:45 a.m. this morning, Lakewood Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a residence on Lanes Mill Road in Lakewood. Upon arrival, emergency personnel observed a residential structure on fire with numerous residents outside,” said Ford. Ford explained that residents at the scene advised authorities that an adult male was still inside the home. Thousands gathered to pay final respects to fallen officer
For hours before the noon Funeral Mass for slain Lakewood police officer Christopher Matlosz began today, they streamed into the streets around the church at Main Street and Madison Avenue. In black and shades of blue, in double-breasted coats and plain uniform shirts, police from around the state, the East Coast and beyond gathered to honor Matlosz, who was shot and killed last Friday while on patrol. They were among the thousands of people who stood in the cold to await the funeral procession, salute the casket and stand guard as the fallen officer’s loved ones paid their final respects. Crockam apprehended in Camden by state and federal 'high risk entry' teams, taken to Ocean County Jail in Toms River
The suspect in the murder of a Lakewood police officer was captured Sunday during an early morning “high-risk entry” in a Camden apartment, ending a two-day manhunt for the killer, authorities said. The suspect, Jahmell Crockam, 19, is accused of killing Chris Matlosz, a 27-year-old Lakewood police officer from Manchester who was a Howell High School alumnus, authorities said. A viewing will be held Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Lakewood Funeral Home in Howell. A funeral Mass will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Lake Church on Route 9 in Lakewood. The suspect, Jahmell Crockam, 19, is accused of killing Chris Matlosz, a 27-year-old Lakewood police officer from Manchester who was a Howell High School alumnus, on Friday, authorities said. Crockam plans to plead not guity to murder and weapons charges, said Frank Gonzales, deputy public defender who is representing the suspect. Bail was set at $5 million. Police continue to hunt for a suspect in the Friday shooting death of a beloved Lakewood police officer from Manchester who was a Howell High School alumnus. The tributes for Chris Matlosz, a 27-year-old officer who was engaged to be married, also continue to pour in. The law-enforcement community, as well as many people who knew him personaly, are paying respects to Matlosz, whose fiance was at the hospital when he died. He is survived by his brother and mother.
