Letter: Reps Should Table Reintroduced EMS Bill

EMS bill must be reworked, local emergency responder urges

The following letter written by Manchester First Aid and Rescue Squad Publicity Officer Edward C. Lynch was sent to 10th Legislative District Assemblymen Dave Wolfe and Greg McGuckin, calling on them to take action to table a bill which revises emergency medical service delivery requirements.  As my Assembly representative, please contact your colleagues on the Appropriations Committee and ask them to table A2463.  I was very disappointed to see that the EMS bill (A2095) had been reintroduced as A2463 without addressing the issues raised by Gov. Christie in his conditional veto of A2095/S818 at the end of the last legislative session. It was especially disheartening to see that no impartial impact statement was prepared, as the Governor …

Rumana and Donna Simon, have prepared legislation for introduction on Monday that the sponsors say will aid ratepayers during weather emergencies, sent a letter to Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee Chairman Upendra Chivukula to launch a bipartisan effort to protect ratepayers. Dear Chairman Chivukula: Thank you for making ratepayers a priority at the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee. We are glad you share our concern for the ratepayers who were stranded without power for several days after last year’s historic storms, including Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee and the October snowstorm. We have prepared legislation for introduction Monday that will help…

McGuckin Pushes for Improved Storm Response

Assemblyman introduces Reliability, Preparedness and Storm Response Act

Column as submitted by the office of Assemblyman Greg McGuckin: Assembly Republicans Gregory McGuckin, Scott T. Rumana and Donna Simon will introduce the “Reliability, Preparedness and Storm Response Act of 2012” to help ensure the power stays on in homes and businesses when disaster strikes.  “Last year’s storms proved that some electric companies were not prepared to keep the power on for homes and businesses,” Assemblyman Gregory McGuckin, R-Ocean, said. “Our plan will ensure they are better prepared to respond and communicate with customers during challenging conditions. Electric companies will be accountable to ratepayers, or pay the price.” The measure, proposed last week by Governor Christie after last year’s outages caused by …

Legislators Support 10 Cent Fee to Retailers Who Use Plastic Bags

Legislation is an environmental issue

Statement on proposed legislation from 10th District Legislators Senator Jim Holzapfel and Assemblymen Dave Wolfe and Greg McGuckin: 10th District Legislators, Senator Jim Holzapfel and Assemblymen Dave Wolfe and Greg McGuckin are signing on as sponsors of Senator Brian Stack’s (D-33) bill S-675 “Plastic and Paper Bag Reduction Act.”  This legislation would require certain retailers to provide recyclable, compostable or reusable bags instead of plastic or paper carryout bags.  Each year, billions of plastic bags are used in the United States and only a fraction of these bags are returned to the store for proper recycling.  These single-use plastic bags are a major concern of pollution in New Jersey, littering highway medians and waterway …

Legislators: Bills Will Help Restore Barnegat Bay

Holzapfel, Wolfe, and McGuckin introduce legislation

Column as submitted by the legislative offices of Holzapfel, Wolfe, McGuckin: Senator Jim Holzapfel and Assemblymen Dave Wolfe and Greg McGuckin of the 10th Legislative District have introduced multiple pieces of legislation in an effort to restore the Barnegat Bay. “Throughout the year the Barnegat Bay is enjoyed by local residents and tourists especially during the summer months when the bay sees an increase of boaters and bathers. The pollution in the bay is detrimental to our state’s economic, aesthetic and recreational value. We must preserve the bay to keep it clean for future generations to enjoy,” said Senator Holzapfel. In recent years, the waters of the Barnegat Bay have been severely impacted from pollution causing the …

Two Vacancies Expected on Township Council

Toms River Republican Club will nominate successors to fill spots of Councilmen McGuckin and Hill

The township council may enter 2012 with two vacancies to be filled by the Toms River Republican Club. Coming out of the November election, Ward 3 Councilman Mo Hill won a seat as the at-large councilman. Councilman Gregory McGuckin was elected to the District 10 Assembly seat. Both will vacate their current township council spots before being sworn in to their respective new seats. Hill isn’t going anywhere, just moving into the at-large council seat on the council, which is one that speaks to town-wide issues as opposed to representing a particular ward’s voice on the council. Neither councilman has submitted their resignation, but there’s no rush to do so. “There is no specific time Greg or Mo has to resign, other than this: they must …

So in 2013 there will be the 4 wards up. If you did not notice your guy Brush and company got trounced, so how did the Ciba Giegy,Camp Alabiondo, Open space and MUA diatribe work out for him? McGuckin Looks to Father's Brick Past While Celebrating Assembly Win

Longtime Toms River Councilman says Brick Township roots a proud part of his victory

Gregory McGuckin’s face reddened as he smiled behind glistening eyes to accept victory as District 10 assemblyman, thanking supporters from the podium of the county Republican victory party Tuesday night. The longtime Toms River Council president couldn’t take a step in any direction without being greeted by a handshake, a hug, or congratulations. “I am so proud to stand here,” McGuckin said. “We are a party of opportunity and I am so thankful for the opportunity.” The GOP team of James Holzapfel, McGuckin and David Wolfe won seats by a wide margin. Holzapfel, a Brick resident and incumbent assemblyman, will take the two-year Senate seat long inhabited by retiring incumbent Andrew Ciesla, while McGuckin and incumbent Wolfe will head to the…

No New Council President Yet

Township Council agrees to table swearing in of new council president. Kubiel continues to serve as acting presdient.

Vice President Brian Kubiel will continue to serve as the acting president of the township council. Originally, the May 24 meeting was scheduled a swearing in of a new council president. The matter was tabled until the June 12 meeting. The May 24 meeting had three council members absent: former council president Greg McGuckin, Councilwoman Maria Maruca and Councilman Maurice Hill. With the minimum quorum of four council members present, the township council agreed to hold off on swearing in a new president. McGuckin, first elected to the Toms River Council in 2003, was chosen as council president again in January. He announced at the April 12 meeting he would step down as council president in order to manage the demands of his bid for …

Council Corner: From the Desk of Greg McGuckin

Council President discusses legislative impact

Submitted by Toms River Council President Gregory McGuckin: Sometimes you just have to shake your head and wonder! Last year at this time, the Democrati-controlled state Legislature promised the 565 towns in this state that they would pass the governor's "Tool Kit," consisting of 33 specific items to help provide property tax relief.  Today they have passed just five of those proposals, leaving 28 still on the table.       New Jersey residents pay the highest property taxes in the nation, an average of over $8,000 per home.   Thankfully, here in Toms River, property taxes are more then 30 percent below the state average and the lowest of any large community in this state.  However, every resident should be asking the same question of …
