Councilman: Food Fest Toms River's First 'Major Celebratory Event' Since Sandy

Councilman Mo Hill writes about the upcoming downtown Toms River celebration

Saturday May 4, 2013 (rain date of May 5) will be the annual Toms River Food Fest. It will be held downtown on Washington Street between Main Street and Hooper Avenue. The festivities will begin at 12 p.m., running throughout the day and ending at 9 p.m.   The Food Fest’s genesis originated in 1974 when the township decided to celebrate the founding of Toms River on June 24, 1767 with a Founders Day. It was usually held in June near the actual date of the township’s birthday. Founders Day was a joint celebration between the township and the Toms River Chamber of Commerce.   Ocean County participated, providing the portable stage and sound equipment for the reviewing stand and the bands. The event commenced with a parade down Hooper Avenue …

Letter: Four Months After Sandy Challenges Remain

Letter to the editor submitted by Toms River Councilman Mo Hill

The following letter was submitted by Toms River Councilman Mo Hill: Four months after Superstorm Sandy we are still faced with numerous unanswered questions. While we wait for answers to those questions the Township and residents have answered the call and started the recovery process. Toms River and Brick faced the unique problem of fighting the battle on two fronts — the barrier island and the mainland. The primary job initially was debris removal and our Public Works employees and contractors have done a magnificent job. Heavy equipment was dispatched to the barrier island within days after the storm. On the mainland large dumpsters were at the end of most streets that had flooding. Front end loaders removed debris that residents …

Council President: 2013 a 'Challenging' Year for Toms River

Township must pay for Sandy damage and protect barrier island from storms

Column as submitted by Toms River Council President Maurice Hill: The New Year — 2013 — will be a very challenging one for Toms River in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. We still have debris cleaning (at one point in the operation we were removing over 17,000 cubic yards of debris per day), sand removal, screening and beach and dune replenishment, coordination with utilities as they repair their infrastructure and finally repair of the Township roads and bulkheads. As our Town and residents start to rebuild we are faced with two main issues- how do we pay for the repair of the damage done by Sandy and how do we protect the barrier island and our Town from future storms? The budget process has been severely impacted by the storm and will be …

TR Voice of Reason

I heard that there is already a plan in place to dredge the bay and river and it will take up to a year. I didn't hear that from government officials, I heard it from a realtor whose client was approached to use his Rt 37 property to store their equipment trailers while they were dredging.   more ›

Council President: Capital Projects Progressing

Work includes animal shelter, court expansion and more

Column as submitted by Toms River Council President Maurice "Mo" Hill:     The Toms River Capital Budget provides long term financing via bonds to fund equipment and construction projects that have a projected life expectancy of between 10-20 years.  The cost is spread over the useful life of the equipment.  If the total cost of the equipment or project were paid as part of the annual municipal budget the cost would be prohibitive.       Over the past few years the Township has undertaken numerous capital projects such as the indoor ice rink at Winding River Park, sport turf fields with improved lighting for the youth lacrosse and football leagues, renovation of the Richard Clements Law Enforcement Center and municipal court complex, …

Council President: Toms River Finding Efficiencies, Cutting Costs

"Mo" Hill outlines recent savings

Column as submitted by Toms River Council President Maurice Hill: As the Toms River Township Administration starts to draft the 2012 budget the Mayor and Council continue to look for efficiencies and cost savings in our local government to save taxpayer dollars. Recently the Township consolidated over 15 separate medical insurance plans to 3 medical plans resulting in a savings of over $1,000,000 annually.  The institution of single stream recycling with robo trucks has reduced manpower costs, cut down on injuries to personnel and disability claims.  In addition the Township now receives over $350,000 a year in revenue from the County for our recycling. The bi weekly pick up schedule has greatly reduced overtime costs resulting in …

The rates to join these elaborate ball clubs, whether it be soccer, baseball, football, softball, etc, are ridiculous. The amount of money that is paid into joining the club is robbing the parents of the children who should have the right to get out and play; and behind the scenes, the twp is robbing their parents tax money by building another ball field that won't be maintained in 5 years. Kelaher Begins Second Term as Mayor; Councilmen Hill, Sevastakis to Lead Council

Annual reorganization meeting sees parting words from Councilman McGuckin

2011 is over, but many of the same issues, projects and faces will be around in 2012, officials at the annual reorganization meeting of Toms River said this evening. Sworn into his second term, Mayor Thomas F. Kelaher laid out the agenda for the coming year. He said he expects the 2012 budget to again be challenging to put together, in that state aid levels have fallen off dramatically over his last term. However, the mayor pointed to 2011 as a year of great cooperation and hard work in spite of financial obstacles. Kelaher said that they literally weathered the storm in 2011, facing the additional cost of blizzards while being forced to keep budgets under a 2 percent cap. 2012 Kelaher said the significant financial hurdles of 2011 were …

Two Vacancies Expected on Township Council

Toms River Republican Club will nominate successors to fill spots of Councilmen McGuckin and Hill

The township council may enter 2012 with two vacancies to be filled by the Toms River Republican Club. Coming out of the November election, Ward 3 Councilman Mo Hill won a seat as the at-large councilman. Councilman Gregory McGuckin was elected to the District 10 Assembly seat. Both will vacate their current township council spots before being sworn in to their respective new seats. Hill isn’t going anywhere, just moving into the at-large council seat on the council, which is one that speaks to town-wide issues as opposed to representing a particular ward’s voice on the council. Neither councilman has submitted their resignation, but there’s no rush to do so. “There is no specific time Greg or Mo has to resign, other than this: they must …

Martin, you need to get a GRIP. First of all only TWO council seats are up in 2012. Ward 3 and 4. In 2013 all four Wards are up only, not the at large they just won. So in 2013 there will be the 4 wards up. If you did not notice your guy Brush and company got trounced, so how did the Ciba Giegy,Camp Alabiondo, Open space and MUA diatribe work out for him? Letter: Thank You For Your Support on Election Day

Councilman Mo Hill weighs in as Republican campaign closes in Toms River

Letter to the editor as submitted by Toms River Council President Maurice Hill: I would like to thank the more than 15,000 Toms River residents who voted in Tuesday’s election.  One of the most important freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this great country is the right to vote.  We vigorously debate issues and then express our opinion peacefully via the ballot box.  On behalf of the Mayor Thomas Kelaher, Councilmen at Large George Wittmann, John Sevastakis and myself I want to thank the people who voted for us and supported us.  I also want to thank all those who worked tirelessly on our campaign.  No one wins an election by themselves.  It takes grass roots supporters and a team effort.  Finally we pledge to continue to serve the residents…

Council President Hill: Tax Breakdown for Toms River

Councilman explains where money goes

Column as submitted by Toms River Council President Mo Hill: The Local Property Tax Bill Although the residents of Toms River pay their property taxes to the local municipality, some people have the misconception that the municipality keeps all the revenue. Toms River collects the total property tax but then must disperse funds to cover various other taxes that have been assessed. In fact there are eight separate taxes that comprise the total property tax of Toms River residents.  The following chart breaks down the local property tax into those eight separate taxes:        Tax, and its cost per $100 of assessed evaluation        Local Municipal Tax               .362        County Tax                          .279        County Library …
