PICTURE: Monsignor Donovan Helps in Sandy Relief Effort

Students and staff at Monsignor Donovan took an active role in raising money, collecting goods and participating in relief after Hurricane Sandy struck in October.

Saint Joseph Church, Monsignor Donovan High School and Saint Joseph's Grade School banded together to begin relief efforts for those in need in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, providing food and goods, raising funds and assisting LBI homeowners with cleanup. Fans who attended the Nov. 9 football game against Jackson Liberty High School donated 25 boxes of supplies and food to the St. Joseph Food pantry and $1,800 was donated to the Hurricane Relief Fund. Father G. Scott Shaffer organized a collection of food, clothing, paper products and bedding that filled a tractor trailer for first responders.  Students are continuing to place spare change into large collection containers at the schools' cafeterias. PICTURE: Students Raise $4,000 Toward Sandy Relief

An online friendship turned into a big benefit show.

Music can bring out the best in people and the response to Hurricane Sandy has proven that. Amanda Kacperowski, a junior at Monsignor Donovan, and Sara Brilliant, a freshman at Toms River High School North, were brought together from their interest in a band. During Hurricane Sandy, they discussed putting together a charity concert through Pier Pressure, a group they formed to organize the show. It should be noted that the high schoolers put together the event in two weeks in which they found a location for the show, promoted it and found the performers.  Six bands donated their time on Dec. 1 in a show at Intermediate East that drew 300 people and raised $4,000 for the Toms River Regional Schools Hurricane Relief Fund.  The bands were …

Monsignor Donovan announces award earners for Class of 2011

The Monsignor Donovan Class of 2011 awarded many of its Griffins top honors and annual awards as graduation neared this month. The Class of 2011 was awarded $17.2 million in college scholarship and grant money, according to the school Check out the list below for many of the student award earners.  Daniel Suskevich of Toms River was the recipient of the Bishop George W. Ahr Medal in recognition of outstanding commitment to Christian values.  Christina Marzocca of Lakewood, Robert McGeehan of Bayville and Nicholas Paggi as National Merit Commended Scholars.  Ryan Rodriguez was recognized as a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.    Alyssa Hollingsworth of Toms River received the Spirit of St. Dominic Award.  Anthony D’Anton and …
