1. Gov. Chris Christie tossed out a tax credit that would have saved the producers of the MTV show "Jersey Shore" $420,000. The governor vetoed the state Economic Development Authority’s award of film tax credits, citing a difficult fiscal climate and a need to use tax credits to support projects that "benefit the state." Christie has been a long-time credit about the show. 2. After months of protests, contentious meetings and accusations of conflicts of interest, the state Department of Education on Friday rejected charter schools proposed for several successful suburban school districts, approving only four of 55 applications statewide. 3. Toms River Police Department announced that it will have undercover police officers posing as …

Summer flounder regulations will ease while sea bass regulations will tighten.
The announcement of fishing quotas for the 2011 season has prompted a range of reactions from anglers. The quota for summer flounder, often called fluke, will rise by 33 percent in 2011. Federal regulators on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) made the decision last week based on catch data acquired during the 2010 season. For the past several years, anglers have decried tightening regulations on the popular sport fish even as its population has increased steadily. In 2010, the flounder season ran from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day and included a minimum size limit of 18-inches to make a fish a legal keeper. Scientists have debated whether the historically high size limit spurs conservation or allows more fish…
2010 tuition rose everywhere, including $2 a credit at OCC
With Ocean County College leaders resisting a tuition hike in their recent restructuring plan to bridge a $1.58 million budget gap, how does the tuition OCC students pay compare with what other community colleges are charging? First the bad news, tuition went up this year at all 19 community colleges in the state. At OCC the increase was $2 a credit, to $94, an increase of 2.2 percent. Only Atlantic Cape Community College increased its tuition less, 1.9 percent, a $1.80 per credit hike. The largest increase, 7 percent, or $6 a credit, was at Burlington County Community College, followed by 6.4 percent, also $6 a credit at Union County Community College. According to the NJ Council of County Colleges, the $94 a credit charged at OCC is the …

Freeholders bound by state's 2 percent limit on budget increases, while contracts in arbitration may grow 4 percent.
Claiming Gov. Chris Christie's "toolbox is empty for Ocean County,'' Freeholder John C. Bartlett Jr. is calling on him to conditionally veto a bill calling for a 2 percent cap on arbitration awards so it can be changed to cover contracts now being negotiated. While talks with law enforcement unions continue, Bartlett said the county has had to increase their salaries by 4 percent as a result of the existing law. Next year the county can only increase taxes 2 percent because the existing 4 percent cap has been cut in half by the state. "How do we fit a 4 percent increase into a 2 percent cap?'' Bartlett asked. He said the 2 percent cap on future arbitration awards "is an empty gesture for us.'' Bartlett said late Wednesday he will write to …

Ocean County Health Department summit explains what to do.
Bed bugs have infested schools, movie theaters, hotels and more, but according to a county educational workshop on the apple-seed sized creatures, there's still lots of confusion on what bed bugs are. "Back when we were little and our parents used to say 'good night, don't let the bed bugs bite' we didn't know it was a real problem. It's a real problem!" said state Senator Robert Singer (R-Ocean) earlier today at the workshop held at the Quality Inn, Route 37 in Toms River. Bed bugs are so much of a problem now, OCHD officials said they realized that they needed to get this information out there to the public with workshops such as the one earlier today. Additional workshops -- which will also cover what bed bugs look like, to steps to …
