Ocean County students could start degree program close to home
Ocean County College officials are hoping to forge an agreement with Fairleigh Dickinson University that will allow students to begin the process of earning a degree in Tourism and Hospitality locally. "We currently do not have a degree, per se, in hospitality and tourism," said Dr. Jianping Wang, President of Academic Affairs. OCC has been in talks with FDU to allow students to take the first two years of a hospitality and tourism program in Toms River, then transfer to FDU at a significant discount. FDU's hospitality and tourism program is number four in the nation, said Wang, "but their tuition is also very high." With room and board, tuition and fees top $40,000 per year at the Teaneck-based school. Under a potential partnership plan, …
College considers taking custodial services private
Custodial workers at Ocean County College on Tuesday called on the institution's Board of Trustees to reconsider a plan to eliminate their jobs and hire an outside contractor. "We have committed our lives and our careers at this college," said Thomas Zaborowski, who works the night shift. "We planned to end our careers here until last Wednesday when the rumors were confirmed." Zaborowski said the college privatizing custodial services won't mean "better labor," but will negatively affect the lives of long-time employees and their families. "I've been here for four years, two years as a reservist," said Ellen Parashis, another custodial employee who often works at night. "I couldn't wait to work here full time. I'm proud to be here." "You'…

Closures in place for electrical work
Editor's Note: The story is updated with both lanes of Buckwald now open for traffic this morning. A main thorofare for Ocean County College and shortcut between Church and Hooper avenues reopened after about two weeks of construction. Buckwald Drive, closed for electrical repairs, had for most of October seen both lanes closed for the project. College Drive was the only entrance to Ocean County College while Buckwald was shuttered. Through Oct. 5, both lanes of the north-south road were closed, creating reported backups and heavy volume along Hooper Avenue between College Drive and Yorktowne Boulevard through Silverton. On Oct. 12, the road was expected to be open, according to the county roads department. Buckwald and Hooper are both …

Report shows employers plan to hire 10.2 percent more college grads this year.
As the unemployed continue to search for jobs, joining them this May and June will be new graduates, hopeful their new degrees will lead to employment in a chosen field. What will both sets of job-hunters face in the months ahead? A recent report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) positively shows that the hiring environment is improving. Employers plan to hire 10.2 percent more college grads this year. However, nearly 33 applicants are expected to apply for each open position. That's a worse picture than last year, when each opening had 21 applicants vying for it, according to the NACE. And the competition will be stiff — especially in New Jersey, which has a higher percent of adults with college degrees (34.6 …
