Hurricane Sandy

Portraits of Sandy: Mental Health Amid Storm Impact to Toms River

New Jersey Mental Health Association, Ocean County Health Department weigh in

From Andrew Kitchenman, reporting for NJ Spotlight: People struggling with mental health issues like anxiety and depression have a difficult time under the best of circumstances. Now imagine them trying to cope after being forced from their homes for more than 10 days -- part of that time without their medication. Michele Green-Ferrante, a program director at the New Jersey Mental Health Association, doesn't have to imagine. She's working with 20 clients displaced from their Toms River-area homes by Hurricane Sandy, helping them find places to stay and pharmacies that can fill their prescriptions. “A lot of folks came here very quickly and did not have their medication,” Green-Ferrante said. While New Jersey’s healthcare system plans for …

Additional report of West Nile Virus brings county total to eight, says Health Department

An eighth Ocean County resident has contracted West Nile virus, according to the Ocean County Health Department Public Health Coordinator Daniel Regeneye said the department received notification of the case this week. The resident, from the southern part of Ocean County, had underlying health conditions. The resident has since recovered, Regeneye said. “Once again, the OCHD is urging people to continue their vigilant efforts against mosquitoes.  Even with the cooler weather, mosquitoes are still active.  Also, we have had quite a bit of rain, which offers mosquitoes additional breeding areas.  With the cooler weather, the OCHD suggests long pants and long sleeves when outside,” Regenye said. Ready for Flu Season? County Health Department is Here to Help

Flu shots will be available at 44 sites over the course of 42 days; 10,000 doses expected to be distributed

The Ocean County Health Department is ready to help residents prepare themselves for flu season, the Ocean County Board of Freeholders announced Wednesday. The county has earmarked $100,000 for its annual flu shot program, Freeholder Director Gerry P. Little said, and expects to provide 10,000 immunizations. "The numbers are down as a result of (stores such as) CVS and others offering flu shots," Little said, but the county's program remains the largest in New Jersey. Immunizations against the flu and pneumonia will be available at 44 sites throughout the county, with nearly half of those sites at or near senior communities, according to the schedule on the health department's website, www.ochd.org. County Tests Bathing Beaches for Bacteria

Results of recent tests of freshwater, saltwater beaches in Ocean County

The Ocean County Health Department this summer continues its testing for two kinds of bacteria to make sure they pose no threat to swimmers. Water samples are taken at some of the beaches by the Ocean County Health Department and tested at the Ocean County Utilities Authority lab. Weekly testing will be done throughout the summer bathing season. Saltwater beaches are tested on Monday, and fresh water sites on Tuesday. When too many fecal coliform or enterococcus are found, a second round of tests is done. A second high reading leads to an order to close the beach until the bacteria drops to a safe level. The latest water tests are up now on the county website. Visit here to download the latest .pdf file of the tests. If there is a certain …

Two Birds In Bayville And One In Toms River Test Positive For West Nile Virus

Prevention begins in the backyard, Ocean County Mosquito Commission official says

Beware of stagnant water. Any amount - even what a bottle cap holds - can become a breeding ground for larval mosquitoes, said Michael Romanski, Assistant Superintendent for the Ocean County Mosquito Commission "Anything and everything that holds water," he said. "Kids' toys. A bottle cap, something that small." Commission and Ocean County Health Department officials are urging residents to take precautions after two dead birds from the Bayville area and one in Toms River tested positive for West Nile virus. "We're in the business of containing larval mosquitoes," Romanski said. "Going out and spraying adult mosquitoes is kind of a last-ditch effort.' "Look around everywhere for standing water," said health department spokesperson Leslie…
