Both the party boat crowd and shore-based locals getting in on the action
As local anglers try their collective hands at spring fishing after a tough winter all around, the striped bass seem to be cooperating as water temperatures slowly rise. Starting in the northern reaches of this column's publication area, the crew of the Big Mohawk out of Belmar finished their blackfish season this week and decided to dabble in the bass fishery on Tuesday. The result: everyone on board got their limit of stripers. "I know that is what so many of you have been waiting to hear," Capt. Chris wrote on the boat's website. The boat, which sails 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, had a similarly good day Thursday after taking Wednesday off. Parade in Point Boro starts noon Sun.; party starts at 1 p.m.
What's the best way to make Point Borough's Halloween parade even better? Have a big party right after it! That's what the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce is planning for this Sunday. In the past, the parade that closes down Bridge Avenue for a couple of hours had started at 1 p.m. However, this year the parade starts at noon, to be followed by the Halloween "finish line party" at 1 p.m. So, everyone should keep in mind that Bridge will be closed down around 11 a.m. and stay that way for at least a couple of hours. Detours should be taken. The party is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. at Community Park, Bridge Avenue and Beaver Dam Road. The Jazz Lobsters, a big band orchestra, will play from 2 to 4 p.m. There is no rain date. There will be …

Launch of giant crab to reef was delayed from last month
A 47-foot-long hoseshoe crab replica slated to become part of an inshore artificial reef is scheduled to be sunk off northern Ocean County on Thursday morning. After months spent planning and building his creation, sculptor Chris Wojcik’s ultimate plan – to put the crab on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean – was postponed due to weather last month. It was supposed to have been placed at the Axel Carlson reef – located about 2.5 miles off Bay Head and Mantoloking – July 25. On Monday, the state Division of Fish and Wildlife's Bureau of Marine Fisheries, which oversees the state's artificial reef system and the deployment of materials and structures onto its 15 sites, said Thursday has been chosen as the new deployment date. According to …

Birds are first infected specimens to turn up in Ocean County this year
It was bound to happen, sooner or later. Dead birds with the West Nile Virus, have turned up in Brick and Point Pleasant. They are the first birds with the virus found in the county this year, according to Ocean County Public Health Coordinator Daniel Regenye. Of four infected birds found, two were discovered in Brick and two were found in Point Pleasant Borough. The disease is carried by mosquitoes that bite birds, mostly crows, and transmit it to them. The county’s Mosquito Extermination Commission is always on the lookout for mosquito breeding pools with the virus. Of 208 pools samples this summer, only four – two from each town – have been found with the virus, said Freeholder Gerry P. Little. Regenye said the commission is trapping …
