UPDATE: Route 70 Cleared After Afternoon Collision, Fuel and Chemical Spill

Detours were in place as authorities cleaned scene after pest control truck overturns

Route 70 has been cleared hours after the state highway was closed eastbound at its intersection with Route 571 while authorities worked to clean up a spill caused by a two-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon. A Cowley's Termite and Pest Toyota Tundra pickup, driven by 46-year-old Steven Wrzesnewski of Ortley Beach, collided with a Ford Ranger driven by 57-year-old David Romano of Toms River on Route 70 near Wilbur Avenue at about 2:45 p.m., said Manchester Police Department Capt. Lisa Parker.  Romano was traveling west on Route 70 when Wrzesnewski attempted to make a left into eastbound traffic from Wilbur Avenue and the vehicles collided, Parker said. The impact caused the Cowley's truck to overturn, spilling fluids onto the roadway.  …

It was discussed a while ago to eliminate left turns from Wilbur onto 70E. This should be done. Also, people coming West and making a right onto Wilbur should not go into the shoulder at or before the Church. I always wait until I am close to the turn, but I look very carefully to make sure no one is in the shoulder. That is another accident waiting to happen. It's illegal to go into the shoulder…   more ›

Parkway Mile 83 Interchange to be Fully Operational July 4

The reconfiguration of mile 83 on the parkway will be fully operational before July 4 and the traffic lights on surrounding county roads are scheduled to go live on June 18.

A new access road connecting Route 571 to the parkway at mile 83 is expected to open before July 4, county officials said. Part of the Garden State Parkway Shoulder Restoration and Widening Program, the reconfiguration of mile 83 on the Garden State Parkway began earlier this year. The reconfiguration of mile 83 will be fully operational before July 4. “All the new roadways will be open and the traffic will be on them,” said County Engineer and Project Manager Frank Scarantino. The construction is on target for projected dates of completion, Scarantino said. Construction work will continue for some weeks after July 4 to put the finishing touches on the reconfiguration. “There will be continued work for another six to eight weeks to remove …

I don't like the fact that the existing exit ramp (Northbound) is going to be eliminated. All of the traffic heading to 166 (north or south) will now have to funnel to the new light (at the intersection of 166 and the new connector road). If you're wanting to go right onto 166 to continue North onto Rt 9 - you will have to now wait at that light, instead of being able to merge with the traffic (…   more ›

Parkway Project Will Demolish Old Overpasses in Toms River, Brick

County and NJ Turnpike Authority work together on plan for this year to widen roads and create new overpasses at three intersections

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the county are moving forward on plans to improve parkway overpasses and the roads below at three points in Brick and Toms River. Needed work on parkway overpasses, as well as widening the roads below, will lead to an overhaul at three Ocean County roads this year. The county and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, who oversees the Garden State Parkway, will begin work this year at: The work is part of the Garden State Parkway Shoulder Restoration and Widening Program. According to county spokesperson Donna Flynn, the project will widen overpasses by two spans (“spans” refers to the vertical piers on an overpass). There's no southbound exit 83. There's no way to get off the Parkway south between 88 and 82. What's wrong with this picture? There are lots of paying customers who live in, or otherwise have to get to, the big area between Rt. 70 and Rt. 37. Doesn't anybody up in HQ understand that?   more ›

Traffic Issues Downtown and on Bey Lea Road

Two construction projects altering traffic patterns

The long-term construction associated with parking deck repairs and a new parkway interchange are altering traffic downtown and on Bey Lea Road today. At the municipal parking garage, cranework has closed the entrance from Robbins Street, and traffic is again two-way at Robbins Parkway. Previously the roadway became a one-way traffic pattern from East Water Street up Robbins Parkway to Robbins Street. According to the Toms River Engineer's Office, the crane's presence at the top of the parking garage will facilitate the installation of new steel beams, and intermittent traffic changes from two-way to one-way traffic will be ongoing until the work is complete. The project is both to repair the aging parking garage, part of a project that …

Freeholders hold ceremonial groundbreaking in Toms River for 1.3-mile project

Construction is expected to start in November on a new connector road that is designed to improve traffic to and from the Garden State Parkway northbound at interchange 83. County officials held a ceremonial groundbreaking Wednesday on Route 571 in Toms River, which will be widened amid a multitude of improvements within the next three years that have been approved by the county and New Jersey Turnpike Authority. Freeholders were the first to put shovels into the ground to signal the start of a long-discussed and anticipated project.
