From Saint Barbara's Church: "The members of the Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church would like to help their Ocean County neighbors who have been affected in so many ways by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. On November 20, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, delicious, FREE home-cooked turkey dinners - with all the trimmings - will be served to anyone. Homeowners still without electric, children, EMS workers, police, firefighters, Evacuation Center residents, volunteers and anyone from everywhere and anywhere are welcome to come to our "house" for some comfort and nourishment. Elementary school will operate as a satellite location
Saint Barbara's Greek Orthodox Church on Church Road in Toms River will serve as the makeshift Lavallette Elementary School for months to come. The Lavallette School District announced students attending its one school will see classes resume at the church, which will serve as a satellite location for the district. The entire student body of the elementary school has been displaced due to the mandatory evacuation of the New Jersey barrier island for Hurricane Sandy. An untold number of Lavallette families as well as students attending the elementary school from other barrier island communities as tuition students saw their homes face devastation. International Orthodox Christian Charities' (IOCC) Race to Respond Team stopping in Toms River this Tuesday
The Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Community will be welcoming the International Orthodox Christian Charities' (IOCC) Race to Respond Team which is coming to Toms River on Tuesday, July 31. Jim Angelus, Konstantin Kanelis and Brett McKey mark the end of their 3,000 mile bike ride across the U.S. in honor of IOCC's 20 years of global humanitarian service and to raise funds for the organization's relief fund. The riders started their journey in Edmund, Washington and have been on the road traveling across the country for the last 30 days. Along the way the cyclists have stopped at church parishes where they were shown appreciation for their commitment to support IOCC’s humanitarian aid efforts. Saint Barbara's will host tournament and gift auction
A charity volleyball tournament and gift auction hosted by the Ocean County Volleyball Club at Saint Barbara’s Church will give 100 percent of the proceeds to Oceans of Love. Organizers to the Saturday event have sold out the spots available for teams, with 16 teams signed up to play starting at 9 a.m. in the parish athletic center. Meanwhile, from 1 p.m. onward, a gift auction and 50/50 raffle will open in the church banquet hall. Admission is $5. With $125 for teams to register, plus proceeds from admission, the gift auction and concession sales, the event stands to be a successful fundraiser for Oceans of Love, said Scott Binkley, director of the volleyball club.
