UPDATE: Fire at Vacant Ensign Court Home Extinguished

Home has been vacant since sustaining damage from Superstorm Sandy, according to police

A Wednesday morning fire at a Snug Harbor home left vacant since Superstorm Sandy has been extinguished, police said. The blaze at the two-story 1846 Ensign Court home was reported by a neighbor at about 8:30 a.m., according to Toms River Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy.  Fire companies from Silverton, Pleasant Plains, East Dover and Toms River, No. 1 and 2, responded and extinguished the blaze, the chief said.  The homeowner, Andrew Pinto, was not home at the time of the fire, said Toms River Fire Prevention Bureau Director James Mercready.  "While the fire remains under investigation, investigators cannot rule out a mechanical malfunction of an air conditioning unit from the cause of the fire," Mercready said.  The house was deemed …

IDs Required for Damaged Neighborhoods, Looting Worries Emerge

Silverton, Snug Harbor has armed police requiring IDs of anyone trying to enter

Travelers trying to assess Silverton neighborhoods east of Brand Road, or head east past Merrimac in Snug Harbor, must wait to give Toms River Police an identification card showing they live in the area. This situation unfolded yesterday afternoon, as heavily armed police were stationed on such places at Kettle Creek Road and Brand, and stopped each vehicle to make sure they lived nearby. The Silverton Fire Department signed flashed "Reisdents Only," "Police Ahead," and "Please Be Patient," to help manage the influx of cars headed down Kettle Creek as traffic backed up. The police stationed there said the ID checks were to prevent looting, residents reported. Residents reported to Toms River Patch multiple reports of looters or pickers …

Much of Silverton Under Water, East Dover Firehouse Evacuates, Toms River Flooded with Emergencies

Barrier island homes reportedly crumble from ocean waves

Don't go out. Stay in your homes. Toms River Office of Emergency Management Director Paul Daley urged residents to stay sheltered indoors as the township grapples with major flooding, widespread loss of power, innumerable fallen trees, pockets of fire and constant calls for rescue in an extreme emergency situation. "We are in survival mode," Daley said. Toms River had nearly 1,800 calls for help overnight, with a bulk of the emergencies coming after midnight Tuesday from Hurricane Sandy. "Silverton is under water," Daley said. "You can assume all roads in Silverton are impassable." A rescue operation is under way in Ortley Beach using a swift boat rescue for a mother and son trapped in an attic, Daley said. They have been awaiting rescue …

Police Warn Residents To Be On Guard After Three Burglaries On St. Thomas Drive In Holiday City

Brick woman and St. Thomas Drive man arrested and charged in one incident; another St. Thomas Drive man charged with two other burglaries

The vigilance of a Toms River resident who called police after seeing a motorist throw items out of a car window helped lead to the Jan. 12 arrests of a Brick woman and a township resident on St. Thomas Drive, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith Jr. said. The caller, who lives in the Snug Harbor section of Toms River, wrote down the license plate number of the car and called Toms River police. The recovered items included a driver's license, credit cars and a passport that belonged to a woman who lives on St. Thomas Drive in Holiday City at Berkeley, Smith said. Toms River police notified the woman, who was at work, and the Berkeley Township police department. "They told her they had recovered some of her items," Smith said. When the woman …

Last Chance: Take a Dip in Township Pool Before It Closes Tuesday

Labor Day weekend final days of operation for Snug Harbor pool

If you are itching to take a dip in the township pool, you won’t be able to scratch it after this weekend. The municipal pool at Snug Harbor will close immediately after Labor Day weekend, said Toms River Recreation Director Eric Schubiger. That’s the case every year, as Labor Day is picked as the official closing day of the pool. “We close that down, Labor Day weekend, that’s it,” he said. “The beaches are still lifeguarded for a couple more weekends and we just sort of watch the situation, watch the weather for staffing needs there for the beach.” The township pool is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, today, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays. This season, the pool completed some major routine maintenance just in time for its…
