Residents in East Dover, downtown, south of Route 37 and Ocean Beach affected by budget before council tomorrow

The Toms River Fire District 1 budget that failed to pass voters will be in the hands of the township council, who will decide the fate of the spending plan and tax rate. Thursday Referendum Could Mean Possible New Firehouse, But 24 Firefighters Can't Join Voters

Voters only in District 1 can vote. A look at the history of the two downtown firehouses and what their future might hold

For 24 men and women who are volunteer fire fighters, the chance to cast a vote in the Thursday fire referendum isn’t allowed. Those 24 people are volunteers of Toms River Fire District 1, but who live outside the township. Because they don’t live in District 1, they are not allowed to vote. “That’s by state statute. You cannot legally vote if you are not a resident of the district,” said Brian Kubiel, Fire District #1 administrator. Thursday’s vote, however, may have the ramification of taking the two downtown firehouses and having them share one facility. The land buy for the facility is in the hands of the public on Thursday. Voters are being asked whether or not Fire District #1 should buy land at Hooper and Hadley Avenues. The two …
