As motorists take to the roads this Memorial Day holiday, the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety is urging everyone to buckle up. The 2013 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign begins Monday, May 20 and runs through Monday, June 2, according to a news release from the agency. Police departments across New Jersey will crack down on motorists who are not belted. "As we kick-off the busy summer driving season it’s important that everyone buckles up every time they go out, both day and night – no excuses," said Division of Highway Traffic Safety Acting Director Gary Poedubicky in a statement. Home, which is under construction, was not damaged by two small fires Saturday
Toms River police are investigating an apparent arson at a home under construction on Old Freehold Road. Authorities found that two small fires were started at the 1871 Old Freehold Road home property on Saturday, one in the rear yard and another in the basement, said Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy. "There was no damage and police are looking for two white male juveniles that were on bikes who were observed in the area just prior to the fire being found," the chief said. Mastronardy said that one of the males was wearing a white T-shirt, had long dark hair and was riding a bicycle with raised handle bars. Jewelry was taken from the home Friday afternoon, according to police
A Friday morning burglary at a West Earl Court residence is under investigation by Toms River police. An unidentified amount of jewelry was taken from the home during the 11 a.m. incident last week, according to Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy. Police are looking for a white male in his 20s with a thin build wearing blue jeans and a blue flannel shirt, the chief said. A witness said the man entered the home's backyard and exited carrying a brown paper bag. Access to the home apparently was gained through a rear sliding door, according to Mastronardy. Parents concerned that they weren't immediately notified after alleged incidents in January
Toms River school officials did not immediately notify parents about the alleged unauthorized entry of a man identifying himself as a police officer and subsequent sexual contact on a teacher at the request of law enforcement authorities, Superintendent of Schools Frank Roselli said in a letter addressed to parents. Bruce A. Figular, 50, allegedly entered Intermediate East during a regular school day through an open door, claiming he was a police officer, on or about Jan. 13, and proceeded to the classroom where the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said he committed a sex crime on a teacher. A delivery truck driven by a Philadelphia man snagged utility wires and downed a pole, causing detours in the area of Beechtree Drive and Kettle Creek Road Thursday afternoon. No injuries were reported when the truck, driven by Michael Harris, 52, of Philadelphia, struck the wires just after 1 p.m., according to Toms River Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy. Harris was driving the truck southbound onto Beechtree after turning from Kettle Creek when he "realized his vehicle struck utility wires," Mastronardy said. Traffic was detoured for "numerous" hours Thursday while repairs were made by utility workers, the chief said.

An early morning burglary at a Hooper Avenue Subway sandwich shop is under investigation by authorities. Toms River police responded to the 1358 Hooper Ave. location after being advised at 4:30 a.m. Thursday that the front glass door was smashed out, said Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy. After shattering the front door to gain entry, the unknown suspects removed a cash register containing $200, according to Mastronardy. Detours in place on Route 166 as of Tuesday afternoon
Police are investigating a Tuesday afternoon crash on Route 166 that caused the road to be shut in both directions. The route is closed as of late Tuesday afternoon and a detour is in place after a dump truck carrying a back hoe caught on utility wires and snapped a pole at about 2 p.m., said Toms River Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy. The driver of the truck, Frank Lustig, was uninjured in the crash, the chief said. According to Officer David Bartoshek, the arm of the back hoe was 16 feet in the air, two more feet more than allow by statute. Suspect initially fled from officers but was caught at a Toms River apartment complex
A Manahawkin man was charged with theft this past weekend after police said he was driving a luxury car recently reported stolen from a Toms River home. Barry Lewis, 32, of Driftwood Avenue in Manahawkin, was charged with the theft after attempting to evade police in downtown Toms River. The car, a 2002 Lexus, was reported stolen from a Division Street home earlier last week, according to Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy. Police apprehended Lewis on Saturday at about 1 p.m. after Detective Thomas Dimichele observed a "suspicious" Lexus being driven on Main Street, the chief said. Police are investigating an early Saturday morning incident in which a pedestrian was struck and killed while apparently crossing Route 37 near Oakridge Parkway in Toms River. According to Toms River Police Police Chief Michael Mastronardy, an unidentified 47-year-old Minnesota man was crossing Route 37 from south to north at around 2 a.m. when he was was struck by a Earle Dump Truck traveling westbound. The truck driver was identified as John Walton, 37, of Neptune. According to Mastronardy, this is the fourth fatal accident in Toms River this year, and the second involving a pedestrian. Driver of SUV said that accelerator stuck, causing him to lose control and crash into the Terrace View Apartments
An occupant of a Toms River apartment unit was injured when an SUV crashed into her living room Monday afternoon, police said. Police and multiple fire companies responded to the Terrace View Apartments just before 5 p.m. Monday after a 2001 Chevy Blazer driven by township resident Randy Reddiconto, 23, collided into building D, said chief of Police Michael Mastronardy. Sally Thomas was inside of her apartment when the SUV crashed into the living room.
