28 Years Later, Christmas Classic Still Going Strong

The WOBM Christmas Classic kicks off its 28th annual high school basketball tournament this weekend

And it wasn’t long after that the WOBM …

Brick Memorial 57, Toms River East 49 (OT)

The Brick Memorial Mustangs overcame a 10 point fourth quarter deficit with a 15-5 run to close out regulation and force overtime in their consolation game at the WOBM Christmas Classic against the Toms River East Raiders.  Brick Senior Tim O'Shea scored eight straight points over a two minute stretch in the middle of the fourth quarter to help get his team back in the contest, as he would end with a game high 25 points.  The Raiders had trouble overcoming foul trouble in overtime despite protests to the refs from head coach Mike Konopka about the calls.  Toms River was called for over ten fouls in the second half, putting the Mustangs in the double bonus, allowing seven of their eleven overtime points to come from the free throw line.  …

North escapes overtime thriller

#4 Toms River North 65, #13 Monroe 61

Though it took overtime, the Toms River North Mariners were able to hold off a challenge from the Monroe Falcons and avoid an opening round upset in this weekend's WOBM Christmas Classic.  The Mariners were aided in large part by having three of their players reach double digits in scoring, which featured junior Alex Levchenko putting up 25 points, along with sophomore Karl Blum's 10 points.  Toms River also benefited from the play of junior Sean Martin, who recorded a double-double in the contest.  Though he put up 16 points, including the go-ahead basket in overtime with 1:58 to go, it was his impact under the boards late in the contest that helped propel the Mariners to victory.  Overall in the contest Martin recorded 10 rebounds and 3 …

Indians' 3-point loss to Central in Christmas Classic

#7 Central 38, #10 Toms River South 35

In this low scoring defensive battle neither team could get anything going early on, as Central held a slim 14-10 halftime lead.   However in the second half both offenses would begin to pick it up as the two teams would more than double their total first half offensive output.  The game remained tight throughout as neither team could take control of the game.  The Central Eagles did take a 5 point lead with a minute to play as Joe Hardy added two to end with a Central and game high of 13 points.  The Toms River South Indians were able to get within 3 with 32.8 seconds to go as Elijah Dupree drove to the basket for two.  Toms River would get the ball back after the Eagles were unable to add to their lead at the free throw line.  In the …
