Letter: Fire Elections Need To Improve

December referendum was 'morally wrong'

Letter to the Editor

Our system of government is based on informed voters being able to go to the polls and make a choice. The last violated both of these core principles.

First, the voters were not adequately informed about the election or given the proper information in order to come to their own decision. Secondly, voters were not given the opportunity to vote in their local fire houses; only one location downtown was available.

The Fire Commissioners of District 1 held an election that discouraged people to vote. This may not be legally wrong, but it is certainly morally wrong.

In all future , we hope that the Fire Commissioners of both fire districts will encourage voter participation. This should be done by providing sample ballots with complete information and open adequate polling places.
