Pedestrian Struck and Killed Saturday Morning in Toms River

Police are investigating the early morning accident.

Police are investigating an early Saturday morning incident in which a pedestrian was struck and killed while apparently crossing Route 37 near Oakridge Parkway in Toms River.

According to Toms River Police Police Chief Michael Mastronardy, an unidentified 47-year-old Minnesota man was crossing Route 37 from south to north at around 2 a.m. when he was was struck by a Earle Dump Truck traveling westbound.

The truck driver was identified as John Walton, 37, of Neptune.

According to Mastronardy, this is the fourth fatal accident in Toms River this year, and the second involving a pedestrian.

New Jersey Department of Transportation's diversion team response united assisted with traffic, which was detoured in the area until 8 a.m.

Traffic Safety Officer Brian Doyle is investigating the accident along with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, the Ocean County Sheriff's Department and the New Jersey State Police Commercial Unit.
